NUMC INSTALLS THE MOST ADVANCED MEDICAL IMAGING SYSTEM AVAILABLE IN NEW EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT- TOSHIBA’S 320 SLICE VOLUME CT SCAN SYSTEM
Dynamic Volume CT System is Faster, Provides More Accurate Diagnosis and Better Patient Outcomes, Lowering Healthcare Costs and Improving Patient Care
East Meadow, NY …As a testament to the growing demand to improve patient care while reducing healthcare costs, Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System announced that the NuHealth System had installed Toshiba’s Aquilion ONE dynamic volume CT system at the new emergency department of the Nassau University Medical Center, a level I trauma center and teaching hospital in East Meadow, New York. The new emergency department at NUMC is scheduled to open on June 1st, 2011.
“Our cutting edge 320slice CT scanner has the ability to image an entire organ faster, producing clearer and more detailed images for more accurate diagnosis, better patient outcomes and ultimately lower healthcare costs,” Gianelli. “The patients of the soon to be opened new emergency department at NUMC are the beneficiaries of such advanced and state-of-the-art equipment”.
The new CT scan system utilizes 320 ultra-high resolution detector rows (0.5 mm in width) to image an entire organ in a single gantry rotation. Dynamic volume has the ability to produce a 4D clinical video showing up to 16 cm of anatomical coverage, enough coverage to capture the entire brain or heart, and show its movement such as blood flow.
“The new CT scan provides an exam that dramatically reduces diagnosis time from hours and days to just mere minutes for patients experiencing stroke, serious heart conditions and other life-threatening diseases,” added Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director for the NuHealth System. “In addition, the Aquilion ONE’s single, comprehensive exam can provide physicians with data to replace a variety of duplicative tests and invasive procedures.”
Victor Scarmato, MD, chair of radiology at the NuHealth System, said: “The Aquilion ONE CT scanner is the premier technology in Computed Tomography. The ability to scan a large volume in a single rotation can reduce overall costs by replacing the need for multiple tests and invasive procedures, while reducing the amount of contrast material and radiation dose. An entire cardiac scan, for example, can be acquired in one rotation in most patients and we will have the ability to perform CT angiography and perfusion right in the ER. For our patients, detecting and treating disease at its earliest stages can significantly improve their quality of life and help lower overall healthcare costs.”
“Toshiba designed the Aquilion ONE for today’s healthcare environment,” said Doug Ryan, vice president, marketing and strategic development at Toshiba. “By replacing several tests with this single exam, the Aquilion ONE will allow physicians to treat at-risk patients immediately – saving resources and time for both healthcare facilities and patients.”
