East Meadow, NY…Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced the establishment of a new Joint Replacement Program. Patients will be located on a dedicated hospital unit, staffed by a specially trained staff of orthopaedic specialists and nursing staff, working with an interdisciplinary team and treating all ailments associated with the musculo-skeletal system.
“We are pleased to provide the newly established joint replacement program, in a clinical partnership with Total Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, under the leadership of Charles Ruotolo, MD, a specialist in arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery,” said Gianelli. “We continue to elevate the quality of care that we provide the patients of the Nassau University Medical Center, backed by highly trained orthopaedists and nursing staff caring for their patients in a sparkling new floor, dedicated to orthopaedic surgeries.”
Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, NuHealth’s executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director stated: “This program will allow us to cohort our patients in a single patient care unit for those patients who have undergone knee or hip replacement, with specialized staff to meet the unique needs of this population.”
Dr. Stanislav Avshalumov, MD, DO, a joint replacement surgeon at the Nassau University Medical Center, added: “This exciting program begins prior to surgery and includes patient and family education, then continues through the patient’s hospital stay and links with the patient’s post discharge rehabilitation program. The goals of the program are to improve the patient’s experience and to achieve optimal outcomes in the shortest time frame possible.”
Dr. Charles Ruotolo, MD, chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and director of sports medicine and shoulder surgery said: “I am very proud to add a joint replacement surgeon with this rare set of skills. Dr. Avshalumov adds surgical expertise in hip arthroscopy and minimally invasive joint replacement surgery that rivals the best hospitals in the New York area.” “We have on staff one of the few joint replacement surgeons in the Long Island area certified in hip resurfacing, a form of minimally invasive joint replacement surgery. He is also highly skilled in hip arthroscopy and hip joint preservation surgery.”
