NUMC COMPLETES NEW PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IN PHASE II OF $36M EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT MODERNIZATION PROGRAM

Ribbon cutting by psychiatry department staff on December 21, 2011 celebrates the completion of the psychiatric emergency department construction

EAST MEADOW, NY…Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announces the completion of the new psychiatric emergency department, on the ground floor of the Nassau University Medical Center, incorporated as Phase II of the new $36M Emergency Department, opened in May 2011.

“Congratulations to the department of psychiatry staff, under the leadership of Dr. Nyapati Rao, chairman, upon the completion of construction of the soon to be opened new psychiatric emergency department at NUMC. The psychiatric emergency department, containing nine private and state-of-the-art treatment rooms in a 7500 square foot space, is the only separate self-contained emergency unit in Nassau County for adults and children of all ages in acute psychiatric crisis,” stated Gianelli at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “The unit is fully staffed and open for referrals 24 hours a day, every day of the year, with multidisciplinary and specialty staff always ready to provide expert emergency psychiatric care for those in need of evaluation and referral for acute emotional or psychiatric disorders.”

According to psychiatry department chairman Nyapati Rao, MD, MS, the psychiatry department is home to Long Island’s largest inpatient psychiatric treatment center, capable of caring for more than 180 patients daily, including those with the severest mental health disorders. This psychiatric emergency room will provide us with the tools to offer the most expeditious, competent and focused care, with services in child psychiatry, substance abuse, forensic, geriatric and adult psychiatry.
