East Meadow, NY…..Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) officials welcomed 32 medical students, from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, who began their core clerkship rotations this fall at NUMC, Nassau’s community hospital with a public mission. Joined by George Miner, MD, a member of the Board of Directors of the Nassau Healthcare Corporation (NHCC), in welcoming the students, Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NHCC, said: “We are delighted to offer American students studying offshore the opportunity to complete their clinical education at NUMC,  a major academic campus on Long Island and a training center for hundreds of residents and medical students, elevating NUMC’s role as training ground for the future healthcare force of Nassau County.”

The students will be rotating through various departments at Nassau University Medical Center. A three-day orientation was held to convey important information, including patient confidentiality guidelines and HIPPA privacy rules and regulations. Students also participated in more reflective sessions, such as discussions on ways their individual interests and strengths might affect their future career choices in medicine.

At a reception held in their honor, students began the morning with a warm welcome from Steven J. Walerstein, MD, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Medical Director of the NHCC: “I am delighted to welcome you to our NUMC family as you start your core rotations in internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology and psychiatry for the third year medical students and your multiple clinical rotations throughout the hospital and community health centers for the fourth year students. The turnaround of NUMC requires growth in the clinical, academic and financial spheres and you will have ample opportunities to assist us in meeting our educational commitment.”

Various clinical chairs also welcomed the students with some facts about the institution and the communities served. The medical students were given the opportunity to meet and spend time with residents and other students from Stony Brook University and the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. On Thursday, a welcome reception was held to introduce NUMC personnel and clinical leadership. “I am really excited about the upcoming school year. I can see that I am going to learn a great deal in a major academic medical center that trains hundreds of students, with a focus on providing high quality care to the thousands of patients served,” stated Dexter Overbay, one of the incoming students.
