East Meadow, NY… Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director of the NuHealth System, has been elected, effective April 2012 for a one year term, to the executive committee of the board of governors of the American College of Physicians (ACP). Along with his new role within the ACP, Dr. Walerstein will also remain the president of the New York chapter of ACP as well as governor for the Long Island region. In his board capacity, he will participate in discussions regarding ACP policy and development of clinical guidelines. He will also act as an intermediary between his board of governors’ class and the ACP leadership, advocating on behalf of the governors to the board of regents.

Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, congratulated Dr. Walerstein on his newly elected position as president of the ACP for New York:  “It is an honor to have our medical director represent New York state as the president of the NY chapter and governor for the region as well as on the executive committee of the board of governors, giving him the opportunity to set policy and advocate for issues of concern to New York’s general and specialist internists.”

The American College of Physicians (ACP) is a national organization of internists — physicians who specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults. ACP is the largest medical-specialty organization and second-largest physician group in the United States. Its membership of 130,000 includes internists, internal medicine subspecialists, and medical students, residents, and fellows. The ACP is celebrating its 96th anniversary, the organization representing the specialty of internal medicine. It is the world’s largest medical specialty society with chapters in the United States, Canada, Asia and Africa.
In his role as medical director, Dr. Walerstein is responsible for the oversight of the provision of medical care throughout the corporation.  Working closely with the clinical chairs and the department of quality improvement, he reviews the quality of care provided and identifies opportunities for improvement. He also works collaboratively with the dean of medical education in assuring the highest quality training programs for medical students and residents.

Prior to being appointed medical director for the NuHealth System, Dr. Walerstein served as vice president for medical affairs and associate medical director for New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York from August of 2002 through July of 2005.  Dr. Walerstein served as chairman and program director for the department of medicine at Nassau University Medical Center from September 1999 until March 2002.

Dr Walerstein has received numerous university appointments.  Currently, he serves as associate professor for the Hofstra Medical School and adjunct professor for The New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Walerstein has also served as associate professor of clinical medicine for Weill-Cornell Medical College and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Walerstein graduated in 1979 from the Six Year Bio-Medical Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College with a Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, and a Doctor of Medicine.  He went on to complete his postgraduate training in the primary care internal medicine program at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Walerstein currently resides in Dix Hills, Suffolk County.

“I am humbled and honored to have been elected to this prestigious position on the executive committee of the ACP board of governors. The New York chapter of the ACP has historically been a leader within the college and within the medical community in New York State. I look forward to representing the interests of the 12,000 members of the chapter and hope to advocate on behalf of internists on LI, in supporting their efforts to provide quality care to their patients,” said Dr. Walerstein.
