East Meadow, NY…Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System is pleased to announce that, Sandra C. Maliszewski, ESQ, Chief Compliance Officer/Privacy Officer for the NuHealth System, has been accepted into the American Hospital Association Health Care System Reform Fellowship Program.
“Ms. Maliszewski is a valuable member of my executive team, serving both as Deputy General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for the NuHealth System (the Nassau Health Care Corporation). She is uniquely credentialed in our organization as both a midwife and as an attorney,” said Gianelli. “This fellowship will provide Ms. Maliszewski an unparalleled opportunity to work in a collaborative, learning environment to advance implementation of our clinical integration program. Clinical integration is, in my view, the central strategic imperative for NuHealth in period prior to the implementation of the exchanges in 2014. The training and peer support offered by the fellowship will serve as a crucial resource for NuHealth throughout this effort.”
The AHA Health Care System Reform Fellowship is a six-month highly interactive learning experience designed to provide health care leaders with the tools and skills necessary to design, lead and manage emerging care delivery and payment models, such as medical homes, bundled payment arrangements, and accountable care organizations.
The objectives of the fellowship are, to educate leaders about key issues in the implementation of health system reform to achieve higher quality and efficiency, to develop leadership skills in designing, implementing and evaluating new care and payment delivery models and to develop relationships between peers, and organizations involved in health system transformation.
Sandra C. Maliszewski is currently the Deputy General Counsel and Chief Compliance/Privacy Officer at the NuHealth System where she has worked since 2006. In this capacity, Ms. Maliszewski is responsible for providing legal counsel and guidance on a broad range of healthcare law, operational, compliance and strategic issues which includes corporate and transactional issues, board matters and governance, employment and other contracts, procurement, compliance, real estate, and day-to-day issues of informed consent, documentation, medical staff, refusal of care, patient rights, confidentiality, etc. She is a member of the legal/compliance committee at the Long Island Patient Information eXchange, Inc. (LIPIX) as well as the Long Island Center for the Health Policy Studies Advisory Group.
Ms. Maliszewski brings 26 years of healthcare experience to NuHealth, having worked as a registered nurse, family nurse practitioner and licensed midwife in hospitals and private practice. She has published articles concerning quality assurance, quality of women’s healthcare and professional practice issues. Prior to joining NuHealth, she was a member of Ruskin Moscou Faltischek’s Health Law Department, as well as its Seniors’ Housing, White Collar Crime & Investigations, HIPAA Compliance and Healthcare Professionals Practice Groups. She developed a special expertise in corporate compliance, third party payor audits, licensure issues and Continuing Care Retirement Communities. Ms. Maliszewski has lectured and written extensively in such areas as long term care, hospital and nursing home compliance, reimbursement, documentation and professional misconduct. She served as the American Bar Association advisor on the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) drafting committee engaged in revising the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (2006). Ms. Maliszewski is on the board of directors of the Women in Health Management, Inc., previously serving as its President and the New York State Board for Midwifery. She was honored by the Long Island March of Dimes with its 2003 Women of Distinction Award as well as by the 15th Assembly District with its 2008 Annual Women of Distinction Award. Ms. Maliszewski is a member of the New York State Bar Association, its Health Law Section and the Public Health & Policy Committee.
Ms. Maliszewski earned an M.B.A. with Distinction in finance from Hofstra University, Frank G. Zarb School of Business in 2010, a Juris Doctor in 2000 from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, Midwifery Certificate from the State University of New York at Downstate in 1991, Masters in Nursing from Pace University in 1984 and her Bachelors of Science in Biology, in 1981 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
“I am honored to have been selected as one of the inaugural fellows by the AHA. As a team member, my top two initial objectives will be elaborating and expanding on the specific goals and establishing work plans with specific timeframes for implementation of the elements contemplated in the affiliation agreement,” stated Maliszewski.
