NUHEALTH’S PEDIATRICS DEPARTMENT SELECTED BY THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS TO RECEIVE A LEONARD P. ROME CATCH VISITING PROFESSORSHIP

East Meadow, NY……NuHealth’s department of pediatrics at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has been selected by the American Academy of Pediatrics as one of eight programs nationwide to receive a Leonard P. Rome CATCH Visiting Professorship. The program was established in honor of Leonard P. Rome, MD, a pediatrician and tireless child health advocate who dedicated his life to improving children’s health.

The program will enable the NUMC pediatric staff to promote advocacy for children and advance the field of community pediatrics. The amount of $4,500 was awarded to fund a 2 or 3 day educational program focusing on the field of community pediatrics.

One of the child health issues rising to prominence is the importance of early brain and child development (EBCD). The notion of “relational health” (family relationships as a “vital sign”, together with the now-known physical, developmental, and educational consequences of toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences make this an arena where increased attention is critical within the medical community. Within EBCD, strong scientific evidence supports the role of early literacy assessment and promotion (ELAP) in community pediatric settings to improve school readiness, which is a critical social determinant of health.

“We are excited to have been selected to receive the Leonard P. Rome CATCH Visiting Professorship,  connecting pediatric residency programs, community pediatricians, and EBCD/ELAP community programs with a national expert in the field to provide mentorship and encourage collaboration in the field to promote improved child health outcomes,” stated David Fagan, MD, chair of pediatrics at NUMC.  “By encouraging communication and partnership with community pediatricians, community organizations supporting EBCD/ELAP, and families, the Visiting Professorship Grant can strengthen the foundations of healthy child development.”
