NUHEALTH’S LI FEDERALLY QUALIFIED HEALTH CENTER, INC. RECEIVES $2.7M FUNDING FROM HHS TO SUPPORT PRIMARY CARE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
East Meadow, NY………..Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth’s President/CEO, is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded NuHealth’s LI Federally Qualified Health Center, Inc. a $2.7M grant towards increasing the number of primary care residents in its family medicine residency program. With the additional funds, the number of residents will be increased for a total of twenty-one residents providing care to Nassau’s most vulnerable populations.
HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell announced the Affordable Care Act (ACA) funding to support primary care residency programs in 60 Teaching Health Centers (THC) across the nation, including NuHealth health centers. “The funding will help train additional residents during the 2014-2015 academic year, increasing the number of residents trained in the previous academic year and helping to increase access to health care in various underserved communities,” stated HHS Secretary Burwell.
Created by the ACA, the THC program expands residency training in community-based settings. Residents will be trained in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, ob/gyn, and geriatrics.
“We are gratified that HHS has included our LI Federally Qualified Health Center, Inc. family medicine residency program in providing $2.7M funding to support the training of new primary care family medicine physicians through the THC, helping us to train even more physicians in underserved Nassau County communities, while improving access to quality health care for those most in need,” stated Dr. Politi.
Peter Guiney, DO, FACOFP, chairman of NuHealth’s family medicine department and program director for the family residency program added: “This program, which is a continuation of a previous grant, will help us to provide training to an additional seven primary care medicine residents, for a total of twenty-one residents in our various LI Federally Qualified Health Centers community based ambulatory patient care settings as well as improving access and expanding hours. We are not only training primary care physicians and increasing access but we are hiring our graduates to work in our health centers.”
The Executive Director for the LI Federally Qualified Health Center, Inc. David Nemiroff added: “I am delighted that this funding for additional family medicine residents will allow us to further our mission of providing improved health care access to the communities that we serve.”
