East Meadow, NY…Leah Balsam, MD, chief of nephrology and hypertension at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), was recently included in Best Doctors in America 2011-2012 database. The yearlong process surveyed thousands of physicians for their recommendations.

In congratulating Dr. Balsam on her well deserved honor, Arthur A. The Best Doctors in America database is a valued resource that contains the names and professional profiles of approximately 47,000 of the best doctors in the United States.  An exhaustive peer-review survey by thousands of doctors determines the physicians included in the database.  Only those who earn the consensus support of their peers are included.  Doctors cannot buy listings.  For this reason, inclusion in the Best Doctors in America database in a remarkable honor.

Dr. Balsam is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology, with certification as a clinical hypertension specialist. She became the program director for the nephrology fellowship in March 2004 and then became the chief of nephrology and hypertension at NUMC in December 2004. She graduated from State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center and went on to her postgraduate training at Montefiore Hospital Medical Center where she completed her internship and residency. She completed a nephrology fellowship at New York University Medical Center.  She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at SUNY Stony Brook and is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology as well as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Balsam was the editor for the NUMC Proceedings July 2001 December 2007 and serves in various educational and administrative committees. She is strongly committed to teaching and research. Dr. Balsam has been the site director for 1rst year medical students’ Introduction to Clinical Medicine course at Stony Brook Medical Center since 1990, as well as a lecturer for the second year Stony Brook students’ pathophysiology seminars. She gives lectures to and moderates conferences with both the residents as well as nephrology fellows. Dr. Balsam has numerous publications and abstracts and has presented at national meetings. She has mentored many residents’ and fellows’ research projects.  She has had several grants and is a reviewer for research journals such as  Clinical Nephrology, Hemodialysis International and The European Journal of Clinical Investigation. Dr. Balsam is dedicated to fostering an environment of excellence in education, research, and patient care.
