NUHEALTH’S DR. WALERSTEIN, CMO, RECOMMENDS STEPS TO MINIMIZE RISKS OF HEAT RELATED INJURIES
EAST MEADOW, NY…The following is an excerpt from a blog post submitted by Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director of the NuHealth System:
“We will be experiencing heat waves throughout the summer, keep in mind that there are steps to take which will minimize your risk of heat related illness:
1. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, but avoid alcohol and caffeine.
2. Keep your house as cool as possible. Cover windows with shades or curtains during the hottest parts of the day. Use air conditioners and/or fans. Take a washcloth and soak in cool water and wet your forehead and neck
3. If you do not have air conditioning, try to spend at least two hours in the middle of the day in a public place with AC; shopping mall, library, or a friend’s house
4. Lie down, relax, and avoid exercise.
5. Dress for the weather and wear shorts and sleeveless tops. Light colors are better.
6. If possible, go to the beach where it is often cooler”
Dr Walerstein has received numerous university appointments. Currently, he serves as associate professor for the Hofstra Medical School and adjunct professor for The New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Walerstein has also served as associate professor of clinical medicine for Weill-Cornell Medical College and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Walerstein graduated in 1979 from the Six Year Bio-Medical Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College with a Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, and a Doctor of Medicine. He went on to complete his postgraduate training in the primary care internal medicine program at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Walerstein currently resides in Dix Hills, Suffolk County.
