NUHEALTH TO PARTICIPATE IN CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY AT NUMC AND WESTBURY FAMILY HEALTH CENTER ON MAY 3, 2011

East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announces the health system’s participation in Mental Health Awareness Month, throughout the month of May. In addition to raising awareness throughout the month, May 3rd has been designated as Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. The NuHealth child and adolescent and family outpatient center, will be acknowledging the day with an information booth in the lobby of the Nassau University Medical Center, along with a booth in the Westbury/New Cassel Health Center. Staff will be on hand between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in both locations to answer questions, discuss available NuHealth services and offer information regarding issues related to self-esteem and obesity, ADHD, as well as childhood depression.

The newly opened child, adolescent and family outpatient center, offers numerous services that touch the lives of patients and families struggling with emotional, behavioral, social, and medical issues. Our program is designed to help patients between the ages of 4 and 21 and their parents address maladaptive, self-destructive behaviors. Individual, family and group therapies are an integral part of our recovery focused approach. NuHealth child, adolescent and family outpatient center provides a broad range of comprehensive individualized mental health assessments and treatment services for problems such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, delinquent behavior and obsessive thoughts. Our clinical staff provides highly specialized mental health assessments which are used to develop individualized treatment plans for each child and family. We coordinate care to help families manage multiple needs. Parents, guardians or other caregivers are active partners in the recovery of our patients.

“We are pleased to have Sally Ann Graham, PhD, director of child, adolescent and family outpatient center at NUMC and her staff, participating in the National Mental Health Awareness Month as well as Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, an act passed by Congress in 1949. Raising awareness will help us further our efforts to promote the well being of children, youth and families with mental health concerns within our community,” said Nyapati Rao, MD, MS, chair of the psychiatry and behavioral sciences department at Nassau University Medical Center.
