NUHEALTH SYSTEM’S UPDATE #8 1:00PM October 30, 2012
East Meadow, NY…..Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System announces that the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) and the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility (AHP) are both fully operational, on main power. The NUMC emergency department has seen an influx of additional patients, with volume remaining high. Staffing levels are tight and patients are being taken care of appropriately. Provisions were implemented for staff to stay overnight, with cots made available in the auditorium. We have sufficient supplies of medications, food, water and power.
During the storm, seven babies were born at NUMC during a nine hour intense period of the hurricane. The 57 Long Beach Medical Center patients and the 35 nursing home residents who were evacuated and transferred to NUMC and to AHP are still being cared for within our hospital and our nursing home.
In order to accommodate the increasing number of patients being admitted through our emergency department, we are looking to discharge those patients who can be safely discharged.
The NuHealth Family Health Centers in Westbury, Elmont, Roosevelt, Hempstead and Freeport will be closed this week due to loss of power at those locations. Those patients needing medical care can access an outpatient center at NUMC by scheduling an appointment at 516-572-5107. We hope to have the health centers reopened on Monday depending on the availability of power. Those with emergency needs off hours can access our NUMC emergency department or call 911.
We thank our entire staff for their dedication and compassion as our health care workers have always played a critical role during such emergencies as Hurricanes Sandy and last year, Irene, in understanding the importance of reporting to work and staying at work to help care for their patients.
