NUHEALTH SYSTEM SELECTS UNITED SURGICAL PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL, INC. AS PREFERRED JOINT VENTURE PARTNER IN PLANNING, CONSTRUCTION AND MANAGEMENT OF AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER ON THE NUMC CAMPUS

FIRM HAS EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE OF PROVIDING FIRST CLASS AMBULATORY SURGICAL SERVICES FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN A SAFE, COMFORTABLE AND WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT

BOARD APPROVAL AUTHORIZES USPI TO CONDUCT DUE DILIGENCE AND FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS OVER 90 DAY PERIOD, TO DETERMINE FINANCIAL FEASIBILITY OF CONSTRUCTION OF AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER

East Meadow, NY…Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System announced that the board of directors had designated United Surgical Partners International, Inc (USPI) as the preferred joint venture partner in the planning, construction and management of an ambulatory surgery center and associated medical office building on the NuHealth’s Nassau University Medical Center campus in East Meadow, NY. The board resolution, adopted at the July 28th board of directors meeting, authorizes the exclusivity arrangement with USPI, at no cost to NuHealth, where USPI will undertake a due diligence/ feasibility study over 90 days to determine whether or not to proceed on the construction and operation of an ambulatory surgery center and associate medical office building.

“An integral aspect of NuHealth’s strategy to transform its East Meadow campus into a “Village of Healthy Living” is the construction and operation of a new ambulatory surgery center. Such construction and operation is also vital to NuHealth’s desire to better engage with community physicians that are currently unaligned with the NuHealth System, and to increase NuHealth’s commercial payer mix in both the outpatient and inpatient settings,” said Gianelli in announcing the joint venture agreement with USPI, a prominent firm in the business of developing and operating ambulatory surgery centers.

The selection of USPI was made following responses to an April 15, 2010 Request for Proposal for a joint venture partner, returnable on May 21, 2010, from qualified ambulatory surgery development firms interested in entering into a joint venture partnership with the NuHealth System and its master development partner, Health Care REIT and user physicians.

Robert Benrubi, counsel to the President/CEO, added: “USPI is a national firm, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, with a successful history of providing first class ambulatory surgery services for local communities in a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment. We are excited to pursue this preferred joint venture partnership with such an outstanding, high quality firm to help us plan, construct and manage an ambulatory surgery center at NUMC.”

USPI is a leading operator of short-stay, multi-specialty surgical facilities in the United States, with strategic partnerships with local physicians and prominent not-for-profit health systems and with a strong focus on patient safety, physician efficiency and cost management. The firm has $1.8 billion of revenues, managing 169 facilities.

“We look forward to working with a nationally recognized leader in ambulatory surgery centers, in developing a program to meet the need of our community. It would be in NuHealth’s financial and business interests and appropriate on the East Meadow Campus, with its strong focus on patient safety and physician efficiency,” added Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director at the NuHealth System.
