NUHEALTH SYSTEM RECEIVES $7 MILLION CAPITAL GRANT THROUGH HEAL NY PHASE 19 PROGRAM TO ASSIST WITH VARIOUS CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS AT NUMC

FUNDING WILL HELP SUPPORT IMPROVEMENTS IN LABOR AND DELIVERY SUITES, INTENSIVE CARE UNITS RENOVATIONS, CARDIAC CATHERIZATION LABORATORY UPGRADES, CONSOLIDATION OF GASTROENTEROLOGY AND CARDIOLOGY SUITES ON NUMC’S SECOND FLOOR AND FAMILY HEALTH CENTER PATIENT FLOW UPGRADES

East Meadow, NY……..Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that the New York State Department of Health has awarded $7 million in HEAL NY Phase 19 program (Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law for New Yorkers.)  The HEAL funding is being provided to hospitals to assist them in restructuring and in the reconfiguration of their facilities to further improve the delivery of care to patients.

In a letter dated September 30, 2010, Richard F. Daines, Commissioner of the NYS Department of Health said: “We are pleased to inform you that your facility has been selected to receive a $7M award under the HEAL NY Phase 19, to support and fund capital projects to address unmet health care needs in New York State.”

Gianelli, who was delighted by the news and grateful for the support from NYS officials stated: “We owe Governor Paterson, Commissioner Daines, State Senator Craig Johnson, and Deborah Bachrach, who was the head of Medicaid program at the time of the application request, a debt of gratitude for their commitment to the NuHealth System. Receiving notification that our application for HEAL Phase 19 program funding has been approved for $7M for various capital initiatives, is indeed very welcome news and very important to the long term benefit for the patients of the Nassau University Medical Center, our health centers and to our reform agenda.  The much needed renovations and upgrades will improve patient care and provide better service to the populations that we serve.” Gianelli added: “This funding is vitally important in that it will enable us to further achieve the modern mission of quality of care and to further improve the delivery of critical services in a more cost-effective manner, assisting us to construct and upgrade key locations such as the labor and delivery suites and intensive care units, as well as provide upgrades to our cardiac catherization lab, our cardiology and GI suites and improve patient flow in the Elmont and Westbury  health centers.”

Funding for the grants was made available through the HEAL NY program and the Federal-State Health Reform Partnership (F-SHRP). Phase 19 of the HEAL NY grant program provides funds to facilities in financial distress that have demonstrated a willingness to address unmet health care needs by investing in the restructuring and reconfiguration of their facilities, helping to further improve the delivery of quality care to patients.  This funding is part of a very large effort, being undertaken by the State of New York, to right-size and to strengthen New York’s health care system.

Mr. Gianelli expressed his appreciation and gratitude to New York State officials and those NuHealth executives involved in the submission of the successful grant application, especially Gary E. Bie, CFO, Guy Courbois, vice president for operations and Jeff Thrope, Esq., for submitting a credible response on the NuHealth System’s behalf to help obtain $7M for the much needed facility upgrades.
