NUHEALTH SYSTEM RECEIVES $66,750 MARCH OF DIMES NEW YORK STATE CHAPTER COMMUNITY GRANT AWARD TO IMPROVE BIRTH OUTCOMES

East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System is pleased to announce that the NuHealth System is the recipient of a $66,750 Community Grant Award by the March of Dimes, New York State Chapter, to implement the “Centering Pregnancy at NuHealth program.” The grant provides for a one year time period from March 15, 2011 to March 15, 2012, with a goal to reach 225 women, improving birth outcomes and patient satisfaction.

In a letter dated March 4, 2011, Susan B. Rose, Director of Programs Services of the March of Dimes, New York State Chapter, congratulated Dr. Hsu and the OB/GYN on this award: “On behalf of the March of Dimes, New York State Chapter, we are very pleased to present the NuHealth System with a chapter community grant ward to implement the “Centering Pregnancy at NuHealth” program. We are very excited to have this opportunity to support this project which has potential to have a significant impact on the health of mothers and babies in your area.”

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. They carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies’ lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birth weight.

“I would like to thank the March of Dimes for selecting the NuHealth System to be one of seven funded projects on improving birth outcomes. We are honored to accept this prestige funding and are excited and look forward to initiating this project at our centers,” said Dr. Hsu, chair of the OB/GYN department at NUMC. “Through the comprehensive educational component of this grant, we will empower women in taking an active part in their care during pregnancy, changing behaviors through education, counseling and social networking by making healthy choices, breastfeeding, smoking cessation, weight control, exercise and keeping all prenatal appointments.”

“I congratulate Dr. Hsu and his department on this outstanding award. The grant process was extremely competitive and NUMC was one of only 7 projects chosen to be funded by the March of dimes. This is an outstanding achievement for the NuHealth System and will further our commitment to improving the health of mothers and babies being cared for at NuHealth,” said Gianelli.
