NUHEALTH SYSTEM PRESIDENT/CEO, GIANELLI, TO TEACH A HOFSTRA UNIVERSITYGRADUATE CLASS IN HEALTHCARE ECONOMICS

East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, has been appointed as an adjunct faculty member at Hofstra University, where he has started the fall 2010 semester teaching a graduate class in healthcare economics.

In a letter dated September 10, 2010 Herman A. Berliner, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, congratulated Gianelli on his faculty appointment, “We are pleased to welcome you to the official pool of adjunct faculty at Hofstra University, beginning with the fall semester 2010. We are pleased to have you as a member of the Hofstra community, and we hope that the assignments you receive at Hofstra will provide you with successful and rewarding experiences.”

Gianelli expects to cover various topics in his graduate healthcare economics class, including concentrating on a number of topics relating to healthcare economics, mainly how economics apply to healthcare, supply and demand, principles of insurance with a review of social insurance in the U.S., and recent healthcare reform efforts by President Obama and its implications.

As President and Chief Executive Officer of the NuHealth System, Gianelli oversees a $545 million academic medical center, safety net provider, and integrated health delivery system consisting of the Nassau University Medical Center, the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility, four family health centers, and one school based clinic. He has held this position since June 1, 2006. Previously, Gianelli was appointed to the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the NuHealth System in March 8, 2006.

During his tenure, Mr. Gianelli shepherded the NuHealth System to profitability for the first time since its inception ten years ago. Since he began his tenure as Chief Executive Officer, the NuHealth System has been awarded nearly $80 million in funding from the State of New York for facility modernization, developing an electronic medical record, and debt relief. Mr. Gianelli has earned numerous professional, educational, and civic awards and serves as a board member for a number of not-for-profit, professional, and advocacy organizations. Mr. Gianelli has delivered numerous presentations around the country on panels hosted by the National Association of Public Hospitals, the New York State Health Foundation, and the Bond Buyer. He has served as a presenter at a Congressional briefing organized by the Partnership for Medicaid. For the prior ten years, he served in senior executive positions for two Long Island municipalities, as Deputy County Executive for Budget and Finance for Nassau County and as Director of Operations for the Town of North Hempstead.

Mr. Gianelli earned a Bachelors Degree in History from St. John’s University, a Master of Arts Degree in Political Science from Brown University, a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Dowling College, and a Masters Degree in Public Health from Columbia University.

Mr. Gianelli lives in New Hyde Park, New York with his wife, Nassau County District Court Judge Sharon Gianelli, and his two stepchildren, Cameron and Jessica.

“I am honored to have received this prestigious appointment and look forward to working with the faculty in providing graduate students with insights and knowledge regarding all areas of healthcare financing, especially public healthcare financing, resulting from experience obtained during the last four years as the leader of a major multi-facility health system in Nassau County, and in prior years, in a senior executive capacity overseeing significant budgets from municipalities in North Hempstead and Nassau County,” said Gianelli.  “I am gratified by the confidence placed in me by the Hofstra University administration and look forward to this new and exciting challenge.”
