NUHEALTH SYSTEM AND HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY COLLABORATE TO COMBAT OBESITY AMONG ROOSEVELT SCHOOL CHILDREN WITH INTERACTIVE HEALTH FAIR ON APRIL 4TH
East Meadow, NY….Through a $50,000 grant that the NuHealth Foundation procured from the LI Community Fund last year for a childhood obesity initiative in Roosevelt schools, the NuHealth System, in collaboration with Hofstra University, will sponsor a health fair providing middle school students an interactive experience to help them gain knowledge and resources to make better dietary and lifestyle choices.
“We wanted this to be a very practical experience with the NuHealth staff discussing the local food options school administrators have told us about, which often include food from bodegas and fast food places in Roosevelt. We will show them some better options for buying food, and better choices in those places.”
Basic nutrition education will help prevent the complications of obesity which include high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, high cholesterol, heart attack, stroke, and many other health issues. Students will learn about healthy food choices in the school cafeteria, fast food restaurants, supermarkets and local bodegas and work with health care professionals to eliminate health problems or prevent them from becoming serious. Students and their families will also be able to connect with health organizations and agencies in their community for additional resources.
The health fair is one of many components in and ongoing program that uses tenants of the national First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign, to get kids and families on the road to improved fitness and health.
WHEN: WEDNESDAY APRIL 4TH, 2012, 8:30am-1:30pm
WHERE: ROOSEVELT MIDDLE SCHOOL
60 Underhill Avenue, Roosevelt
