NUHEALTH RECEIVES $45,000 GRANT FROM KOMEN GREATER NYC AFFILIATE FOR BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM
East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that NuHealth had received a $45,000 grant from the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help support the breast cancer screening program at the Nassau University Medical Center an initiative to assist covering medical costs for medically underserved women ages 40 to 49 who have limited resources.
The program will involve recruiting and screening uninsured women who have never had a mammogram or who had not had regular mammography screening. Our Mammography Van located in Nassau County communities of need will be available to provide these screenings. The grant will also provide for any follow up services that may be required as a result of an abnormal finding.
“We are grateful to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, for providing the NUMC breast center with a generous grant of $45,000, to help us better serve our uninsured and underinsured breast center patients and help to save lives through a breast cancer screening program said Gianelli. “These funds will assist us in ensuring that all women continue to have access to quality breast services and care, regardless of their ability to pay. By beginning the breast screening program in the community, our aim is to recruit and enroll women right in their neighborhoods.”
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and the Greater New York City Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.
“At the Komen Greater New York City Affiliate, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered that women were still not accessing valuable early detection of breast cancer through mammography and follow up,” said Dara Richardson-Heron, MD, CEO of Komen Greater NYC. “We are confident that through the NuHealth System’s breast screening program underserved women in the community will have low-cost access to the care they need.”
