NUHEALTH HURRICANE SANDY FINAL UPDATE #20 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2012 9:00AM

East Meadow, NY….Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System announces the following Hurricane Sandy final update for the Nassau University Medical Center, the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility and the Family Health Centers:

Yesterday, November 15, 2012, we closed the Emergency Operations Center which had been open continuously since Hurricane Sandy made landfall in late October.

NuHealth played an essential role – perhaps the essential role – in the response to the devastating impact of this storm. We evacuated 100 patients and residents from Long Beach Medical Center and its associated nursing home. We took in – and took care of – hundreds of County residents who lost their homes, lost connection with their doctors, or lost the support needed to live on their own.  Our staff stepped up in this time of crisis when many themselves, were dealing with the loss of their houses, cars, and much of what they had accumulated throughout their lives.

I wanted to convey to all of you how proud I am to serve as your CEO. What we did, together, is being seen throughout the region, and the country, as a model for precisely how to deliver care safely in a time of crisis. There is still a long, long road ahead for all of us. But this is a milestone to mark.

Next week is Thanksgiving, the beginning of the holiday season. Though many of us have lost a great deal, and for many our lives will never be the same, I still believe we should pause to give thanks for the blessings of life, family, friends, and a place like NuHealth where, in the words of Bruce Springsteen, we take care of our own.
