DEVELOPMENT WILL FACILITATE HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES, CREATE JOBS AND STIMULATE THE ECONOMY WHILE PROVIDING ENVIRONMENTALLY SUBSTAINABLE BUILDINGS
East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that the recent NuHealth’s proposals for the Village of Healthy Living in East Meadow and the Senior Village at Patterson in Uniondale, have been designated as “Projects of Regional Significance” by the Long Island Regional Planning Council.
“We are proud to have the NuHealth proposed developments at East Meadow and Uniondale designated as a “Project of Regional Significance,” vital to the Long Island economy as NuHealth will be managing over $600 million of facility development in two campuses and with job creation of over 800 new medical staff positions in addition to the 1,000 new construction jobs,” stated Gianelli. “In addition, this designation will bring more attention to our project and with that, potentially being able to access state and federal grants. Our goal in this development is to provide environmentally sustainable building solutions with a comprehensive energy program, implementation of strategic best practices and project certification for a LEED campus.”
Town of Hempstead Supervisor, Kate Murray, who wrote a letter in support, stated: “Genuine and measureable benefits could inure to residents of our area as a result of the projects. The Village of Healthy Living envisions the creation of a new destination for both health and wellness services. The Senior Village at Patterson is focused on serving the needs of mature residents, proposing an array of services along with affordable senior housing and a new A. Holly Patterson nursing care facility.”
Gianelli added: “The requests for proposals were issued on April 15, 2010 for exciting opportunities for qualified developers to respond to plans, help create thousands of jobs, meet the housing needs of seniors and medical residents and provide medical offices while improving healthcare for the residents of Nassau. The responses were due on May 21, 2010 with the selection of a preferred developer to occur in June 2010.”
The RFPs were issued in partnership with NuHealth’s master real estate developer, Health Care REIT, Inc. For the East Meadow Village for Healthy Living, the RFP will target rehabilitation of current resident housing and construction oh new resident housing for medical residents, as well as partner for a new ambulatory surgery center with associated medical offices.
For the Senior Village at Patterson in Uniondale, the RFP will address 388 units of affordable senior housing, a 150 bed Medicaid Assisted Living Facility and 100,000 square feet of commercial office development.
Robert Benrubi, special council to the President/CEO said: “Receiving designation as a Project of Regional Significance is exciting news and important to the future of the NuHealth System as we move forward to create extensive opportunities for developers to help us further our mission and vision for these two properties, helping to transform our land resources, revitalize the economy and improve the health care of our Long Island residents.”
LIRPC Chairman, John Cameron stated, “The NuHealth Development Proposals in East Meadow and Uniondale present an excellent opportunity for Long Island for upgrading of vital health care facilities, providing housing opportunities for our seniors and health care professionals as well as creating vital economic development for our Island at a critical time.”
Michael E. White, executive director of the Long Island Regional Planning Council said: “The NuHealth proposed developments at East Meadow and Uniondale will improve Long Islanders quality of life by bringing needed economic development – local jobs building “green buildings” to provide improved health care and wellness services for all on our community. The LIRPC will work with NuHealth to expedite the review and approval process to make these projects of regional significance a reality.”
The Long Island Regional Planning Council represents both Nassau and Suffolk counties in long-range planning for the Island. It also serves as a major voice for Long Island and as an advocate on issues affecting local governmental policy, regionally significant projects, grants and funding. It addresses such major overarching issues as the economy, tax and governance, infrastructure and equity. LIRPC is preparing a LI 2035 Regional Comprehensive Sustainability Plan which focuses on Key elements of economic development, property taxes, job creation, affordability, housing, education, health care, transportation, energy, water, wastewater, waste management, the natural environment and social equity.
