NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER’S INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY TRAINING PROGRAM RECEIVES MAXIMUM FIVE-YEAR CONTINUED FULL ACCREDITATION, AS A RESULT OF RECENT AMERICAN COLLEGE OF GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION INSPECTION, REFLECTING VIBRANT ENVIRONMENT OF EDUCATION AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY

Only 20% of `programs nationally receive accreditation for five years, a testament to excellent training provided by NUMC faculty

East Meadow, NY…..Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation, announced that the internal medicine residency training program at the Nassau University Medical Center, received the maximum five year continued full accreditation, as a result of a recent American College of Graduate Medical Education inspection.

“This award highlights the quality of the medical education provided by the NUMC faculty and our overall commitment to teaching and scholarly activities,” said Gianelli, while congratulating the program directors and physicians charged with teaching the 68 internal medicine residents.

Aloysius Cuyjet, MD, chair of the department of medicine, program director and vice president for minority health initiatives at the NHCC, was delighted to receive notification of the continued accreditation:  “Only approximately 20% of programs nationally receive accreditation for five years.  Our three-year residency program is accredited for our 68 internal medicine residents and fellows, a testament to the efforts of our staff and leadership in attaining this accreditation.”

Steven J. Walerstein, MD, senior vice president for medical affairs and medical director for the NHCC added:  “This accomplishment by the department of medicine reflects an overall commitment of the NUMC administration and faculty to the highest level of education.  On top of recent successes in accreditations for surgery, obstetrics/gynecology and psychiatry, this reflects a healthy and vibrant environment of education and scholarly activity.”
