Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation proudly announced that eight Nassau University Medical Center physicians have been included in the Castle Connolly’s New York Metro Area’s   “Top Doctors”. This prestigious list, based on peer nomination, research, careful review and screening of the doctors’ board certification, licensing and disciplinary history by a doctor-director research team, lists those whom Castle Connolly has determined to be the top 10% of the region’s physicians.

In congratulating Drs. Chaur-Dong Hsu, Glenn Faust, Kenneth H. Hupart, David Rosenthal, Leonard O. Barrett, Roger Simpson, Marianne Frieri, Harriet S. Chaur-Dong, Hsu, MD, MPH, FACOG,   chair, department of obstetrics and gynecology

Dr. Hsu officially joined Nassau University Medical Center as chairman of the department of obstetrics/gynecology in January 2008, coming from Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York, where he was the chairman of the department OB/GYN as well as vice chair and professor with tenure at New York Medical College.  Dr. Hsu graduated from Kaosiung Medical University in Taiwan in 1982 and came to the United States for his residency training at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.  He became a postdoctoral researcher and a clinical fellow of maternal-fetal medicine at Johns Hopkins University.  At the same time, he obtained his Master’s degree of Public Health and was a Doctor of Philosophy candidate at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.  He joined Yale University as a faculty member from 1993-1999, and became a professor at Duke University in 2000.  Dr. Hsu has been focusing on the research in preeclampsia and intraamniotic infection during pregnancy. 


Glenn Faust, MD, FACS, chair, department of surgery                                                  

Prior to becoming chairman of the department of surgery at Nassau University Medical Center in January 2007, Dr. Faust had been the chief in the division of vascular surgery in the department of surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.  Before holding that position, Dr. Faust had served as the associate program director in the general surgery residency program at the North Shore/LIJ Health System.  Dr. Faust graduated from the Yale University School of Medicine and completed his residency in general surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY.  From 1991 to 1992, Dr. Faust completed his fellowship in vascular surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.  Certified by the American Board of Surgery with a Certificate of Special Qualification in Vascular Surgery, Dr. Faust, who is an assistant professor of surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is active in the New York Cardiovascular Society and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.  His clinical interests in vascular medicine range from carotid artery disease and aneurysm repair to the management of venous diseases, including varicosities. 

Kenneth H. Hupart, MD, FACP, chief, division of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism

Prior to joining NUMC, Dr. Hupart served as the medical director of the outpatient department at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY.  He was a member of the faculty of endocrinology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he was an associate professor of clinical medicine.  Dr. Hupart received his undergraduate education at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University and was awarded his Doctor of Medicine degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1982. He completed his training in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and then served as chief resident in medicine.  Dr. Hupart remained at Montefiore and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine for his training in endocrinology and was appointed to the faculty at the completion of his training. Dr. Hupart also leads the endocrine, diabetes and thyroid biopsy clinics and is the chief of the new metabolic bone and osteoporosis clinic

David Rosenthal, MD, FACP, FACE, attending physician, division of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism

Dr. Rosenthal attended medical school at New York University and completed his residency in internal medicine at Wilfor Hall, US Airforce Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.  His fellowship in the field of endocrinology, metabolism, diabetes and nuclear medicine was achieved at Boston University Medical Center.  Dr. Rosenthal is dually board certified on internal medicine and in endocrinology/metabolism.
Prior to 1972, Dr. Rosenthal served as the chief of the department of medicine at the United States Air Force Regional Hospital in Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois from 1967 to 1970 at which point he served in the same capacity at U-Tapao, Thailand during the years 1970 and 1971.  In addition to serving as a Major in the US Air Force, Dr. Rosenthal also served as a consultant in internal medicine to the Surgeon General of the 13th Air Force during 1970 and 1971.  Upon Dr. Rosenthal’s return to Long Island in 1972, he joined a private referral practice in endocrinology and also joined the voluntary attending staff at NUMC in the endocrinology division and became actively involved in the NUMC fellowship teaching program.  In 2006, he left private practice to devote all his professional time to NUMC as an attending physician.  His appointment at SUNY Stony Brook as an assistant professor of clinical medicine has been continuous since 1972.

Leonard Octavius Barrett, MD, FACS, DDG, FABI, chief, thoracic surgery and director, surgical critical care

After honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps in 1974, Dr. Barrett entered and graduated Iona College in New Rochelle with a degree in biology and chemistry.  He graduated from SUNY Downstate in 1983 with a medical degree.  In 1989, he completed his residency in general surgery at SUNY Stony Brook, where he remained an additional year to complete a surgical/critical care fellowship.  He then completed a cardiothoracic fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey.  Since then, Dr. Barrett has qualified for board certifications in general surgery, surgical critical care, and thoracic surgery.  In 1983, Dr. Barrett began his assignment at NUMC as a thoracic surgery attending and as a director of surgical critical care and was appointed in 1995 as chief of thoracic surgery. Dr. Barrett operates on all chest trauma patients and manages critical trauma patients in the intensive care unit. He has received numerous awards, including Teacher of the Year, for seven years in a row.

Roger Simpson, MD, FACS, director of the burn center at NUMC

A senior partner in the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group in Garden City, Dr. Simpson has been in practice since 1980. He directs the LIPSG’s Center for facial paralysis where he provides state of the art, life altering surgery to restore function to patients’ paralyzed facial nerves caused by stroke, disease, and traumatic injury. Dr. Simpson also focuses on burn reconstruction and hand surgery as well as performing general plastic hand reconstructive surgery. In addition to private practice, Dr. Simpson has been the director of the residency training program in plastic and reconstructive surgery at NUMC for the last twenty years. He is also the chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery, director of the burn center and chief of the hand surgery service at NUMC. Dr. Simpson is an assistant professor of clinical surgery at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Marianne Frieri, MD, PhD, FACAAI, FAAAAI, chief of allergy and immunology

Dr. Fieri is an attending and chief of allergy immunology in the department of medicine, at Nassau University Medical Center as well as an attending at the North Shore- Long Island Jewish System, and a professor of medicine and pathology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She received a Ph.D in 1976 in microbiology, immunology from the University of Health Sciences, Chicago Medical School, Chicago, IL, and an M.D. in 1978 from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL. She was a  medical intern and resident at St. Joseph’s Hospital, affiliate of Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, IL 1978-80, and a clinical associate, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH, Bethesda, MD from 1980-83. At Nassau University Medical Center, she became director of clinical immunology and immunopathology in 1983. She was president, Long Island Allergy and Asthma Society, from 1995 to 1997, and has received numerous awards. She has conducted 27 allergy Immunology CME updates, published 87 papers, 274 presentations, 147 abstracts, and 9 book chapters.

Harriet S. Boxer, MD, FAAP, director of neonatology

A graduate of the University of Rochester with a BA in chemistry, Dr. Boxer received her medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 1972. She completed her residency at Babies Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and at Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Following a fellowship in neonatology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center from 1995 to 1997, she became board certified in pediatrics and in neonatal-perinatal medicine. She has worked in the division of neonatology in the Nassau University Medical Center’s department of pediatrics since 1977, holding the position of director of the division since 1989.

Dominick Sabatino, MD, FAAP, director, pediatric hematology/oncology

Dominick Sabatino, MD, director pediatric hematology/oncology is a graduate of the University of Bologna, Italy, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.  He is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology, and since 1988, has served as director of pediatric hematology/oncology at NUMC.  Prior to joining the medical staff at NUMC, Dr. Sabatino was the associate director of pediatric hematology/oncology at The Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn, NY and assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at SUNY, Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine, Brooklyn. He is presently a professor of clinical pediatrics at SUNY Stony brook, School of Medicine.  Dr. Sabatino is the author/contributor to several books, articles and abstracts.  His particular area of expertise is hemoglobin disorders, and he was instrumental in establishing the first comprehensive Cooley’s anemia program in Brooklyn, NY in 1973.
