DR. ANNUNZIATO CELEBRATES SIX DECADES OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER’S PEDIATRIC PATIENTS
East Meadow, NY….Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation announced that David Annunziato, MD, FAAP, Director of Pediatric Education at Nassau University Medical Center and Professor of Pediatrics at SUNY Stony Brook Health Sciences Center, was honored by Presiding Officer Diane Yatauro and the Nassau County Legislature, for his dedication as a pediatrician, over more than six decades, to promoting the health of Nassau’s children. To commemorate the occasion, he received a citation on December 1, 2008 at 10 AM in Mineola.
Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation, while congratulating Dr. Annunziato on this well-deserved honor, stated, “We are indeed fortunate and grateful that Dr. Annunziato has dedicated himself to the pediatric patients of NUMC for over six decades. Also fortunate are the more than 350 former resident physicians whom he has taught and who continue to practice on Long Island. We congratulate him upon receiving a well-deserved citation from Presiding Officer Diane Yatauro and the Nassau County Legislature.”
Dr. Annunziato received his bachelor’s degree from Wagner College and then in 1946, his medical degree from the Long Island College of Medicine, now the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.
After his residency training in pediatrics and pediatric infectious diseases — and a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy – Dr. Annunziato entered the practice of medicine on Long Island in 1952. He quickly was appointed Director of Pediatrics at the Brunswick Hospital in Amityville and then in 1959 was appointed the first chairman of Pediatrics at the Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. He resigned these positions in 1973 when he was recruited to become Director of Pediatric Ambulatory Services at the Nassau County Medical Center.
He had been a voluntary attending Pediatrician there from 1952. He later became Associate Chairman and Acting Chairman of the Department there. Over the years, Dr. Annunziato has trained more than 350 pediatric resident physicians.
Dr. Annunziato has been active in a number of local and national organizations. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of New York Chapter 2 of the American Academy of Pediatrics from 1961. He served on many of their committees and held offices culminating in being elected President of the Chapter in 1973. Later he was elected Chairman of the New York State District of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Pediatrics from 1987 through 1993. He has worked on and chaired many committees on a national basis. In 1993, he was invited to the White House by President Clinton to assist in drafting a children’s health plan for the nation. Dr. Annunziato is a member of the Board of Directors of the Nassau Academy of Medicine. He is a member of several of their committees and chairs their committee on Preventive Health.
Dr. Annunziato has received numerous awards including several from the March of Dimes including their first ever Silver Stork Award. He has also been honored by both Nassau and the Suffolk Pediatric Societies, the New York State Perinatal Association as their Physician of the Year, in recognition of a lifetime of service to children. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from the New York State Public Health Service, several teaching awards including the Richard Day Master Teachers Award from his alma mater. He is most proud to have been given the most prestigious Clifford G. Grulee Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics for Outstanding Service to Children and to the Academy. This award is given to one pediatrician each year chosen from around our nation.
He has lectured on various topics at most Long Island hospitals and has authored a number of scientific papers including one recently on “Smallpox Vaccination” in the Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics. Dr. Annunziato is retired but continues to be active in Pediatric Education at the Nassau University Medical Center, primarily producing the Continuing Medical Education (CME) lecture series for the Department of Pediatrics, where he has been organizing these lectures for more than 45 years.
