NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION FROM THE NY ORGAN DONOR NETWORK FOR SAVING LIVES THROUGH ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION

East Meadow, New York…..Nassau University Medical Center was recently presented with a certificate of appreciation, by the New York Organ Donor Network, in recognition of the hospital’s efforts in saving lives through organ and tissue donation.

Nassau University Medical Center, Medical Intensive Care Unit staff, referred in May 2009 a potential organ donor to the New York Organ Donor Network.  “With the cooperation of the staff and the generosity of the patient’s family, the unfortunate death of a 20-year-old patient resulted in life-saving transplants for five other persons,” said Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation.  “Patient’s liver gave a new lease on life to a 48-year old male,  right kidney gave a 65-year-old male a renewal on life, his left kidney saved the life of a 17-year-old female, his pancreas saved the life of a 44-year-old female, and his heart now beats life into a 32-year-old male,” added Mr. Gianelli.  In addition, eyes, skin, bones and heart valves were also recovered for transplantation.

There are more than 100,000 persons in the United States waiting for a donated organ.  The New York Organ Donor Network saves lives through organ and tissue donation.  For additional information on the New York Organ Donor Network, please call 1-800-GIFT-4-NY, www.donatelifeny.org.
