NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER RECEIVES ANONYMOUS $1 MILLION DONATION TO ADVANCE WOMEN’S HEALTH
Transformative Donation Funds State-of-the-Art 3D Mammography and Bone Density Technology, Expanding Early Detection and Preventive Care for Patients
.
EAST MEADOW, NY – Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) today announced a transformative $1 million donation dedicated to the protection and advancement of women’s health. The anonymous gift – secured by NuHealth Board Chairman Stuart Rabinowitz – will fund cutting-edge 3D mammography and bone density scanning systems, significantly enhancing NUMC’s ability to diagnose breast cancer and monitor bone health — two of the most critical health issues affecting women’s lives.
.
“This extraordinary act of generosity will help us detect breast cancer and osteoporosis earlier, treat them more effectively, and save countless lives,” Dr. Richard Becker, NUMC Interim CEO said. “This is an investment in every woman who entrusts her care to NUMC.”
.
“The new technology funded by the generosity of an anonymous donor has strengthened NUMC’s ability to provide the highest quality care to our patients. We are deeply committed to ensuring accessible care for every member of our community, and this investment will help us deliver on that promise for generations to come.” said Stuart Rabinowitz, Chairman of the NUMC Board of Directors.
.
NUMC provides equitable, high-quality healthcare to women across Long Island, particularly those in underserved communities. This donation comes at a pivotal time, as the hospital’s existing mammography equipment, acquired in 2010, has reached the end of its serviceable life.
.
Last year, more than 2.3 million women worldwide were diagnosed with breast cancer, and nearly 700,000 lost their lives. On Long Island, approximately 1 in 8 women will face a breast cancer diagnosis — with even higher rates among patients from underserved communities who rely on NUMC for care. Early detection is essential: when breast cancer is found in its earliest stages, treatment is often less invasive and survival rates are higher.
.
The donation will fund new Hologic 3D mammography systems with biopsy capability, streamlining diagnosis and accelerating care. Manufactured by Hologic – the global leader in breast imaging technology – these systems generate precise, high-resolution 3D images that assist care teams to improve cancer detection accuracy, reduce unnecessary biopsies, and cut anxiety-inducing callback rates by nearly 50%. The systems also feature self-controlled compression for greater patient comfort and allow both screening and biopsy to be performed on the same platform.
.
NUMC’s Mobile Mammography Unit (MAMMO VAN) already brings Hologic 3D technology directly into the community, expanding access to breast cancer screening for patients who may otherwise face barriers to care. The new in-hospital systems will build on this success, reinforcing NUMC’s commitment to early detection and health equity.
.
Just as early detection saves lives in breast cancer, identifying bone loss and osteoporosis early is vital to maintaining women’s long-term health. Bone density screening is considered standard care, particularly for post-menopausal women, as it directly influences the management of chronic diseases and overall quality of life.
.
The anonymous donation will fund a new Hologic Horizon Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) System, replacing an outdated model. The Horizon DXA uses low-dose X-rays to accurately measure bone mineral density (BMD), evaluate fracture risk, and assess body composition, including fat and lean mass. The system’s high-resolution imaging and fast output enable precise, efficient, and preventive diagnostic care.
.
Together, these new systems will provide women with a complete range of advanced imaging for early detection and preventive care, offering faster, more accurate, and more comfortable screening experiences for patients.
