NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER ACHIEVES RECOGNITION AS ONE OF HEALTHGRADES 2014 GYNECOLOGIC SURGERY EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENTS, ONLY HOSPITAL IN NASSAU COUNTY TO RECEIVE IT 3 YEARS IN A ROW, 2012-2014
East Meadow, NY, June 17, 2014. Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announces that the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has been named one of a select group of hospitals—the top 10% of the hospitals evaluated — identified as providing outstanding performance in gynecologic surgery, as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. In addition to being the only hospital in Nassau County to receive the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award for 3 years in a row, 2012-2014, NUMC is the only hospital in Nassau County in the top 5% for Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award for 2 years in a row 2013-2014.
Gynecologic surgery includes surgery on the female reproductive system to treat benign tumors, cancer, infertility, incontinence, and various other conditions. Hysterectomy accounted for the majority (75%) of all procedures evaluated. To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance in gynecologic surgery, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcome data for all patients (all-payer data) provided by 17 individual states for years 2010 through 2012. Healthgrades found that there is a significant variation in quality for gynecologic surgery.
“I am delighted to recognize NUMC’s OB/GYN department for its Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, a testament to the expertise of the clinical staff for attaining levels of optimal performance required to ensure best outcomes for patients undergoing gynecologic procedures,” said Dr. Politi. “The distinction made by Healthgrades confirms that our OB/GYN department, led by Chaur-Dong Hsu, MD, MPH, FACOG, is among a select group of hospitals nationwide with a growing reputation to ensure successful outcomes for our patients.”
From 2010 through 2012, patients treated in hospitals receiving 5-stars for Gynecologic Surgery have, on average a 57.45% lower risk of experiencing complications than if they were treated in hospitals receiving 1-star. From 2010 through 2012, if all hospitals performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars in Gynecologic Surgery: 17,760 in-hospital complications may have potentially been avoided.
“The Healthgrades 2014 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award recipients have achieved this distinction by demonstrating a continued commitment to gynecologic surgery over an extended period of time,” said Evan Marks, EVP, Informatics and Strategy, Healthgrades. “Choosing one of these hospitals can help provide women with the peace of mind that they are making the right decision for their gynecologic surgery needs.”
Victor Scarmato, MD, acting chief medical officer for the NuHealth System, joined Dr. Politi in extending his congratulations to the OB/GYN staff upon achieving five star status for gynecologic surgery : “NUMC’s OB/GYN staff deserve praise and recognition for this prestigious national distinction bestowed upon them. Congratulations to Dr. Hsu, physicians, nurses, midwives, aides and the entire departmental team. This top ranking affirms that we provide the highest level of care to achieve an enhanced quality of life for our patients.”
Dr. Hsu congratulated and praised his departmental staff: “I would like to thank our entire OB/GYN staff on achieving this success. We are honored to receive this award and are proud that our staff’s expertise, professionalism and dedication have made this accomplishment possible.”
