EAST MEADOW, NY (August 22, 2017) — Nassau County Acting Police Commissioner Pat Ryder, Chief of Department Kevin Smith and Nassau County Chief Fire Marshall Scott Tusa will join Nassau University Medical Center CEO and President Dr. Victor Politi in a major announcement that the region’s only public hospital has been awarded  Level 1 Trauma Status. They will be holding a press conference with local police and fire officials to thank the hospital and its medical staff and doctors for treating over 73,000 patients in the emergency room, Thursday, August 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, NY.  Level 1 Trauma Status is the highest designation that a hospital can achieve in the United States for emergency patient care.

A Level I Trauma Center is a comprehensive regional resource that is capable of providing total care for every aspect of injury.  Nassau University Medical Center’s Level I Trauma Center provides 24-hour, in-house coverage by general surgeons plus specialties including orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, internal medicine, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial, pediatric and critical care.

Thousands of local residents involved in traumas as well as serious auto and boating accidents are taken by the Nassau County Police to Nassau University Medical Center every year. The hospital has two helipads, allowing it to receive emergency patients by air as quickly as possible in order to save lives.  The hospital is closest to Jones Beach bringing it the highest number of swimming and beach emergencies in the region.  LI’s only fully operational burn center and multi-place hyperbaric chamber treat victims of fire, carbon monoxide poisoning, and diving accidents.
