East Meadow, NY…. Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation announced that the Nassau and Suffolk Alumnae Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will be sponsoring a domestic violence conference in conjunction with the Nassau University Medical Center’s Sexual Assault Forensic Examination program (SAFE,) to educate the public about domestic violence, with a call to action to end domestic violence.

“We are delighted that the Nassau and Suffolk Alumnae Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., an organization of professional women providing public service to Nassau and Suffolk Communities for over 45 years, has joined with NUMC’s SAFE program to educate the community about domestic violence by holding the Long Island Regional Domestic Violence  conference on March 14, conducting domestic violence workshops and providing the community with information about medical treatment and resources,” said Mr. Gianelli.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has sponsored a variety of community-based programs such as voter registration drives, college tours, scholarships, economic development workshops, educational conferences, health fairs, and visits to the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility.

This year, the Nassau Alumnae Chapter forged a strategic alliance with the Nassau University Medical Center to educate the community about domestic violence. As part of this initiative, Pamela Washington, Nassau Alumnae Chapter President and Carolyn Bentley, Suffolk Alumnae President will work closely with Lorraine Cashin to conduct domestic violence workshops for students at the local colleges to educate them about date rape, safety tips, and resources for medical treatment. “I am looking forward to interacting with the undergraduate chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the students at Hofstra, Stonybrook, C.W. Post, SUNY at Old Westbury, Adelphi, and St. John’s University campuses,” said Ms. Cashin.

In keeping the national sorority’s focus for its annual Regional Day of Service, the conference will feature interactive panel discussions, health screenings, informational workshops, a dramatic presentation as well as self-defense demonstrations all geared towards educating Nassau County residents about domestic violence, treatment and resources.

“We are pleased to be working with the Nassau University Medical Center to help educate and provide care and comfort to victims of domestic violence,” said Pamela Washington, President of the Nassau Alumnae Chapter.
