ARTICLE ENTITLED “BUILDING A MEDICAL HOME FOR THE UNDERSERVED IN NEW YORK CITY: LESSONS LEARNED FROM A PRIVATE PRACTICE”, IS TIMELY AS UNINSURED RATES CONTINUE TO RISE IN THE US
East Meadow, NY………The Nassau Health Care Corporation’s Vice President of Ambulatory Care and Community Medicine and Chair of the Department of Community Medicine, Mitchell Rubin, MD, had submitted a paper that was accepted for publication for the May issue of the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved at Meharry College, Johns Hopkins University Press.
Dr. Rubin’s paper is entitled “Building a Medical Home for the Underserved in New York City: Lessons Learned from a Private Practice.” The article, published as the uninsured rates continue to rise in the United States, is timely in its discussion of Dr. Rubin’s experiences in building his practice, working in Spanish Harlem, learning about the surrounding communities and the lessons he learned while treating medically vulnerable and at risk patients.
“While there is much discussion about the importance of culturally competent care in serving poor and minority communities, all populations respond to a caring provider in a friendly, well organized and efficient organization. Over the past 25 years as a clinician, I have found that many of the same values that motivated my early practice among affluent suburbanites, where optimal conditions can be taken for granted, also served me well in serving disadvantaged populations, where they cannot be,” said Dr. Rubin.
After receiving his undergraduate degree at Cornell University, Dr. Rubin obtained his MD and training at New Jersey Medical School, Roosevelt St. Luke’s Medical Center (NYC), and New York University Medical Center. After over a decade in private practice, he became Director of Community Medicine and Community-Based Practices at two of New York City’s public health care networks, serving Harlem, the South Bronx and Queens, as well as a pediatric Program Director. In these roles, he addressed the needs of poor, multi-ethnic urban communities served by urban hospitals and their satellite clinics. His major efforts have been in the areas of practice development, teaching, and research, being actively involved in local, regional, and national medical initiatives, including NIH, HRSA, and NAPH projects focusing on primary care access and health care disparities.
Currently, he is Vice President, Ambulatory Care and Community Medicine, and Chairman of the Department of Community Medicine, at the Nassau Health Care Corporation, the safety net health care system in Nassau County, New York. Dr. Rubin holds academic appointments at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (Departments of Community & Preventive Medicine, and Pediatrics), New York University School of Medicine (Department of Pediatrics), and New York Medical College (Departments of Pediatrics and Health Policy and Management).
