PRESTIGIOUS DUAL APPOINTMENTS ARE TESTAMENT TO DR. RUBIN’S COMMITMENT TO PRIMARY AND PREVENTIVE MEDICINE FOR THE UNINSURED AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES OF NASSAU COUNTY
East Meadow, NY…..In a letter dated September 8, 2008,, and signed by Richard Fine, MD, Dean, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Mitchell H. Rubin, MD, VP for Ambulatory Services and Chair of the Department of Community Medicine at the Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC), received notification of his appointments as Professor of Clinical Preventive Medicine and Pediatrics at the State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook.
Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), a community hospital with a public mission and part of the NHCC safety net health system, is a teaching institution, training hundreds of residents and medical students each year to obtain their clinical experience while serving diverse populations in a community hospital with a public mission. As an affiliate of the SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, many of NUMC’s faculty have academic appointments through the SUNY Stony Brook system. This is in recognition of scholarly and teaching efforts performed through the NHCC for Stony Brook students, NUMC’s residents, other trainees, and the community at large.
In congratulating Dr. Rubin on his appointment, Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation and Steven Walerstein, MD, Senior VP for medical affairs and medical director for the NHCC said: “This recognition and honor reflect Dr. Rubin’s career-long commitment to community and preventive health. After having served communities in New York City, we are privileged to have Dr. Rubin as a leader in elevating the quality of care for NHCC’s patients.”
Dr. Rubin has over 25 years of experience in the clinical, operational educational aspects of community-based medicine, both in private practice and safety net health system settings. After serving for nearly 14 years as managing partner of a large group in Bergen County, New Jersey, Dr. Rubin then worked for over a decade with communities of East Harlem and the South Bronx as Director of Community Medicine for the Generations Plus Health Network of the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation (HHC), and then, directed the Pediatric Residency Program at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center, another HHC facility.
After receiving his undergraduate degree at Cornell University and his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dr. Rubin trained in pediatrics in Roosevelt St. Luke’s Medical Center and in neurology at New York University Medical Center. Dr. Rubin’s career has been focused on providing high-quality medicine to diverse and vulnerable communities. He has been involved in, and has consulted on, numerous local and national initiatives to improve the care provided to underserved populations. These efforts have included projects funded by the National Institute of Health to improve primary care access and the Federal Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Office of Performance Improvement.
A Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, Dr. Rubin also holds academic appointments in the Department of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine, in Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s Departments of Community and Preventive Medicine and Pediatrics, and at New York Medical College in the Departments of Pediatrics and the School of Public Health.
In accepting his appointment, Dr. Rubin said: “I am delighted to be joining the faculty of SUNY Stony Brook and look forward to continuing our commitment to improve the health status of not only those at risk, but all of the people of Nassau County.”
