MARIANNE FRIERI, MD, PHD, FAAAAI, FACAAI, CHIEF OF ALLERGY IMMUNOLOGY AT NUMC, GUEST SPEAKER AT THE 2012 ANNUAL MEETING OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CERTIFIED ALLERGISTS  AND AMERICAN COLLEGE OF ALLERGY, ASTHMA AND IMMUNOLOGY

East Meadow, NY…. Marianne Frieri, MD, PhD, FAAAAI, FACAAI, chief of allergy and immunology at the Nassau University Medical Center, was invited to lecture at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Certified Allergists (AACA) and American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) on November 9-10, 2012 in Anaheim, CA. The meeting offered an exciting array of educational sessions for physicians, allied health professionals and office managers.

 Dr. Frieri lectured on “Difficult to Treat Anaphylaxis, Case Study Review” at the AACA. This lecture included the evaluation of patients with various manifestations of anaphylaxis, idiopathic anaphylaxis, mastocytosis, mast cell activation syndrome and possible mechanisms underlying these disorders and treatment options.

Dr Frieri is current chair of the AACA Education Committee and became president of the AACA on November 9, 2012. Primary goals are directed to undergraduate medical education. Teaching aids  include participation in actual course work such as the Immunology section of the curriculum directed usually during the second year in the microbiology-immunology course and  later during the third and fourth year during the students rotation in Pediatrics and Internal medicine on the wards and during their Allergy-Immunology outpatient exposure in small group settings  to include the Objectives for Medical Students  This was developed  in 2008 by Dr. Frieri and  she also uses  the 2012 Northwestern Syllabus for medical student and residents syllabus in the outpatient clinic and gives, reprints of articles from the Proceedings (POPS, Clinical Pearls and review articles) 
 

The purposes of the  American Association of Certified Allergists (AACA)is to promote the interest of and encourage professional excellence in the field of allergy and clinical immunology spearheaded by certified allergists;  provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and methodology regarding allergy and its related disciplines;  foster and provide continuing education and professional development in the field; and undertake such other programs and activities as will enhance recognition of the field such as introducing innovative educational programs directed at the undergraduate education of medical students, residents, and postgraduate students with emphasis on stressing the importance of allergy-immunology and the need to incorporate it in the medical school curriculum.

At the ACAAI on Nov 10, Dr. Frieri lectured on “Update in Allergic Rhinitis & Immunotherapy” which reviewed the recent advances in allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, discussed recent advances in allergen immunotherapy (SCIT vs. SLIT), and reviewed the comparison of SCIT vs. SLIT, mechanisms and applications.
