MARIANNE FRIERI, MD, PHD, CHIEF OF ALLERGY AND IMMUNOLOGY AT NUMC, INVITED TO ADDRESS WORLD CONGRESS OF ASTHMA
EAST MEADOW, NY…Marianne Frieri, MD, PhD, chief of allergy and immunology in the department of medicine at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), has been invited as a symposium speaker at the August 2012 World Congress of Asthma, in Quebec, Canada, to address a topic on vitamin D, allergic disease and asthma.
“I am honored to have been invited to address this very prestigious group of world leaders in the area of asthma. The members of the organizing committee have put together an educational and networking meeting that should be one of the highlights of 2012 in the field of respiratory medicine for clinicians and researchers, as well as for any allied health professional interested in asthma,” said Dr. Frieri. “World class speakers have been invited to offer an update on the epidemiology, physiopathology, clinical management and various other aspects of care of children and adults with asthma.”
The World Congress of Asthma is the major scientific activity organized by INTERASMA and has been held with great success all around the world (New Orleans, Montpellier, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Tokyo, Jerusalem, Guadalajara, Saint Petersburg, Monaco, Athens, among other cities. Interasma was founded in 1954 with the aim of uniting the efforts of internists, pediatricians, allergists and chest physicians to provide a better standard of care for asthmatic patients. Two years later the very first World Congress of Asthma was held in Lubeck/Bad Lippspringe, Germany. Since then, congresses have been held successfully every two to three years, with steadily increasing quality and participation. As one of the primary activities of Interasma, this Congress represents an outstanding opportunity for scientists studying asthma and clinicians treating asthmatic patients to share recent information and experiences. This is especially important, as over the past few decades, a dramatic increase in asthma prevalence has occurred which has created a great socio-economic burden in many parts of the world.
“Through this World Congress of Asthma, there can be a closer look at the causes of asthma which will hopefully allow development of more effective treatments for this widespread disease. Last April 2011, The NuHealth System announced that NUMC had been awarded its second Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP) grant from the New York State Department of Health for asthma clinical research, for an interdisciplinary patient centered approach to the evaluation and treatment of asthma in Hispanic and African American patients. I am honored to have started this important study at NUMC in the management and treatment of asthma in vulnerable populations,” added Dr. Frieri.
