MARCELLE M. MORCOS, MD, FACS, NUMC’S CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF OPTHALMOLOGY, TO BE HONORED BY THE ORDER SONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA NEW YORK STATE GRAND LODGE
East Meadow, NY… Marcelle M. Morcos, MD, FACS, chair and program director of the department of ophthalmology at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), is the 2010 Banko Honoree for the Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) N.Y. Grand Lodge Foundation Gift of Sight program. Dr. Morcos will be honored at the foundation’s annual luncheon on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, New York.
In a letter dated September 2010, Marianne Principe O’Neil, chairlady for the New York State Order Sons of Italy in America (NYSOSIA) Gift of Sight, stated: “The highlight of the Gift of Sight luncheon is to bestow a special award to each of two deserving and exceptional individuals. The Banko Award will be presented to Dr. Morcos, whose contributions in the field of ophthalmology and research have been highly acclaimed throughout the United States and world-wide.”
Arthur A. Gianelli, President/ CEO of the NuHealth system congratulated Dr. Morcos: “This outstanding honor is a testament to Dr. Morcos and her expertise in the field of ophthalmology, demonstrating NUMC’s commitment to its patients in providing the highest quality of care. I am delighted to congratulate Dr. Morcos on this prestigious award.”
The Gift of Sight Program of the New York Grand Lodge OSIA began in 1982 and gives assistance to people in need with vision problems … both medically and financially. In addition to the many lay volunteers who serve on this committee, prominent physicians in the fields of ophthalmology, optometrics and other related medical disciplines have donated their time and expertise to the program. These physicians are the medical committee-at-large … and are available for second opinions and consultations. In addition, the committee has the volunteer services of a prominent surgeon who serves as a medical advisor on a regular basis.
Marcelle M. Morcos, MD has been associated with NUMC since 1977. She received her own residency training at NUMC, and upon completion of residency in 1980, Dr. Morcos immediately joined the voluntary staff in the division of ophthalmology. Dr. Morcos has always been dedicated to teaching the residents of ophthalmology and to providing care for the ophthalmology clinic patients. Through her dedication, she first became director of the ophthalmology clinic in 1994, then became chief of the division of ophthalmology in 2001. Under Dr. Morcos’ direction, the division of ophthalmology flourished and became its own department in 2007, at which time, she became the chairman of the department of ophthalmology. Dr. Morcos spends countless hours working with the ophthalmology residents and teaching the minute details of diagnosis and treatment of all ophthalmic conditions, both medical and surgical. This dedication produces the highest quality of patient care and a well-trained select group of ophthalmology graduates.
Dr. Morcos is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member of the American University Professors of Ophthalmology, a fellow of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Morcos has received the Physician Recognition Award from the American Medical Association for over ten years. She was named previously one of America’s top Ophthalmologists by the Consumers’ Research Council of America and a member of both the national register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals and the Cambridge Who’s Who among Executive and Professional Women in Teaching and Education.
