LYNN A. SCHAEFER, PH.D, ABPP, CERTIFIED AS BRAIN INJURY SPECIALIST TRAINER BY BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
East Meadow, NY…Lynn A. Schaefer, Ph.D, ABPP, clinical neuropsychologist and director of neuropsychology at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), has been certified by the Brain Injury Association of America as a certified brain injury specialist trainer (CBIST). Dr. Schaefer can now train staff members to become certified as well.
Lyn D. Weiss, MD, chair of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, commended Dr. Schaefer on her efforts to further her own knowledge as well as that of her fellow staff members: “This certification solidifies the commitment by the department and NUMC to provide the most comprehensive care to those who have been affected by brain injury.”
“I am excited to have finally completed the certification process, and look forward to training our staff in anticipation of the opening of our new Brain Injury Unit,” said Dr. Schaefer
The mission of the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS) is to improve the quality of care given to individuals with brain injury through the education and training of those who work in brain injury services. To that end, ACBIS offers a national certification program that establishes best practices for the training of individuals working with this population. CBISTs must demonstrate advanced skills in brain injury and provide documentation that those skills are being maintained through continuing education. To be certified, applicants must also demonstrate skills in the areas of training, supervision, and/or teaching within the brain injury field, and pass a written exam
Dr. Schaefer, a Nassau resident, is director of neuropsychology in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at NUMC, and a faculty member of the division of psychology in the department of psychiatry. She earned her Ph.D. in 2002 from the City University of New York Graduate Center, in the neuropsychology subprogram at Queens College, and is board certified in clinical neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.
