LONG ISLAND MEDICAL FOUNDATION, THE PHILANTHROPIC ARM OF THE NUHEALTH SYSTEM, RECEIVES $35,000 JOSIAH MACY, JR. FOUNDATION GIFT TO PROMOTE CLINICAL COORDINATION OF HEALTHCARE DELIVERED BY CLINICIANS SERVING UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS
GRANT WILL SUPPORT NUHEALTH’S EFFORT TO DEVELOP AN ONGOING RELATIONSHIP WITH COMMUNITY PHYSICIANS WHO PROVIDE HEALTH SERVICES TO THE MEDICAID POPULATION
East Meadow, NY.., Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announced that the Long Island Medical Foundation (LIMF), NuHealth’s philanthropic arm, had secured a $35,000 gift from the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation. “I am delighted and grateful to the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation for providing us with this generous gift to help us develop strategies to increase care for the underserved population in our surrounding communities,” said Gianelli. “Congratulations to the board members of the LIMF and especially to Jack O’ Connell, for securing this foundation grant which will support our efforts to develop an ongoing relationship with community physicians serving underserved populations.”
The Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation is a philanthropic foundation founded in 1930 by Kate Macy Ladd (1863-1945) in honor of her father Josiah Macy Jr. The Foundation became internationally known for the support of the Macy conferences starting late 1940s: a series of interdisciplinary meetings of scientists. The Foundation has focused its resources on improving the education of health professionals, particularly physicians, awarding many of its grants to projects that broaden and improve the education of physicians and other health professionals, with considerable emphasis on health educational strategies to enhance primary care in the United States health care system.
In a letter dated July 22, 2010, George E. Thibault, MD, Foundation President, confirmed the grant award by stating: “I am pleased to inform you that the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation has awarded the Long Island Medical Foundation a one time grant in the amount of $35,000 to support NuHealth in seeking improvement and promoting clinical coordination of healthcare delivered by clinicians serving such underserved population.”
Gianelli concluded: “This grant will provide us with a wonderful opportunity to improve our professional medical education in the context of health care reform and allow us to increase diversity among health care professionals while increasing care for underserved populations.”
