LI MEDICAL FOUNDATION, THE PHILANTHROPIC ARM OF THE NUHEALTH SYSTEM RECEIVES $1.2 MILLION GRANT FROM THE KERMIT GITENSTEIN FOUNDATION FOR THE PURCHASE OF DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT

DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT WILL ALLOW STAFF TO SEE UP TO 33% MORE PATIENTS IN SAME TIME PERIOD, WITH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY  BEING  FASTER, USING LESS RADIATION, PRODUCING HIGHER QUALITY IMAGES AND REDUCING THE NEED TO TAKE REPEAT IMAGES

East Meadow, New York…..Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System announced that the LI Medical Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the NuHealth System, had received a $1.2 million grant from the Kermit Gitenstein Foundation for the purchase of digital mammography equipment.  The three digital units will be used for the National Mah Jongg League Foundation Breast Center at the Nassau University Medical Center and for the mobile mammography van.

“We are grateful for the $1.2 million Kermit Gitenstein Foundation gift, the largest philanthropic contribution in the history of the NuHealth System.  These funds will be used to pay for the three full-field digital mammography units:  two for the breast imaging center and one for the mammography van.  It will allow our staff to see up to 33% more patients in the same time period, with digital technology being faster, using less radiation, producing higher quality images and reducing the need to take repeat images,” stated Gianelli.  “Digital technology improves the patient experience dramatically.  Above all, it will help further our commitment to bridging the divide between the types of services available to women who can afford private insurance versus those who lack the financial means or ability to access such plans,”  added Gianelli.

The Breast Cancer Screening Program provides a full complement of preventative services and treatment options to approximately 90% of the uninsured women in Nassau County, and has performed over 95,000 mammography studies.  The program remains one of the largest of its type in New York State, and the largest provider of mammography services to uninsured and underinsured women in all of Nassau County.

“This gift is important in many other ways as well.  It signals to key individuals, corporations and private foundations, that this institution is capable of attracting major philanthropic investments, all for the benefit of our patients” concluded Gianelli.
