KRISHAN KUMAR, MD, FAAP, FACEP, NUMC’S DIRECTOR OF PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY, RECEIVES AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION PHYSICIAN RECOGNITION AWARD, FOR PARTICIPATION IN SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES
EAST MEADOW, NY…….Krishan Kumar, MD, FAAP, FACEP, director of pediatric emergency at the Nassau University Medical Center, was recently recognized by the recent American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award during their International Continuing Medical Education conference, organized by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin in Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr. Kumar received a certificate of recognition for his scholarly activities and extensive community service from Suresh Reddy, MD, AAPI CME chair and chief of interventional neuroradiology at the Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
In congratulating Dr. Kumar on his well-deserved award, Arthur A. Gianelli, president of the NuHealth System, said: “Congratulations on receiving the AMA Physician Recognition Award from Dr. Reddy. This outstanding recognition is a testament to Dr. Kumar’s commitment to scholarly activities and expertise in the field of pediatrics and emergency medicine.”
Prior to receiving his award, Dr. Kumar, who is also clinical professor of pediatrics at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and assistant professor at the New York Medical College, had presented a lecture on the “Management of Anaphylaxis”. Anaphylaxis is the most serious type of allergic reaction, with food being one of the most common allergens, medicine, insect stings, latex and exercise can also cause a reaction. It can progress very quickly and may cause death without proper medical attention.
During his lecture, he presented various cases of patients that he had treated following a severe allergic reaction that in some cases can be fatal if patients present to the emergency department unresponsive and not breathing. There are between 500 and 1500 deaths per year from anaphylaxis. Dr. Kumar also discussed various treatments that could stop near fatal allergic reactions before arrest occurs or reverse once arrest occurs.
Dr. Kumar graduated from medical school in India in 1977 and immigrated to the US in 1984. He joined Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, NY as a resident, and soon became associate director of emergency medicine in 1988. He joined Nassau University Medical Center in 1990 as an attending in the department of emergency medicine/pediatrics. Currently, he is serving as a director of pediatric emergency medicine. Besides mentoring young physicians in their residency training, he has become a pillar for the department in clinical excellence.
Moreover, Dr. Kumar keeps busy in the academic world as an clinical professor of pediatrics at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and assistant professor of emergency medicine at New York Medical College. As a physician-scientist, he has published several papers in emergency medicine and chaired the prestigious conference of International Emergency Medicine “INTEM 2006,” in New Delhi, India. He works and teaches at all levels of emergency care, and is actively involved in the teaching and training of paramedic students, medical students, pediatric and emergency medicine residents and EMTs. Dr. Kumar is also a medical director of the Fire Police Academy at Nassau University Medical Center.
