KRISHAN KUMAR, MD, DIRECTOR OF PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY SERVICES AT NUMC, APPOINTED TO NASSAU COUNTY MINORITY AFFAIRS COUNCIL

KRISHAN KUMAR, MD, DIRECTOR OF PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY SERVICES AT NUMC, APPOINTED TO NASSAU COUNTY MINORITY AFFAIRS COUNCIL

East Meadow, NY…… Krishan Kumar, MD, director of pediatric emergency services at the Nassau University Medical Center, has been appointed by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano to the Minority Affairs Council. In a letter dated October 7th, 2012, Melissa Gallucci, acting director of Human Resources for Nassau County, indicated: “You have been asked to serve on the Minority Affairs Council, effective September 24, 2012. Thank you for your dedication to public service and the citizens of Nassau County.”

The Office of Minority Affairs (OMA) was created by the Nassau County Legislature and its mandated mission is to serve as a partner to the citizens of Nassau County in strengthening and building communities. The Office of Minority Affairs serves as a central coordinating body for county funded and county assisted agencies or offices.

In accepting the appointment to the Nassau County Minority Affairs Council, Dr. Kumar stated: “I am honored and privileged to have been appointed by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano to the Nassau County Office of Minority Affairs, to serve on the Minority Affairs Council. I look forward to serving with the other members of the Council in promoting the development, advancement and betterment of economic, employment, business and cultural opportunities for the minority residents of the county and the improvement and stabilization of economically deprived areas in Nassau County.”

Dr. Kumar graduated from medical school in India in 1977 and immigrated to the US in 1984.  He joined Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, NY as a resident, and soon became associate director of emergency medicine in 1988.  He joined Nassau University Medical Center in 1990 as an attending in the department of emergency medicine/pediatrics.  Currently, he is serving as a director of pediatric emergency medicine.  Besides mentoring young physicians in their residency training, he has become a pillar for the department in clinical excellence. 
Moreover, Dr. Kumar keeps busy in the academic world as a clinical professor of pediatrics at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and assistant professor of emergency medicine at New York Medical College. As a physician-scientist, he has published several papers in emergency medicine and chaired the prestigious conference of International Emergency Medicine “INTEM 2006,” in New Delhi, India. He works and teaches at all levels of emergency care, and is actively involved in the teaching and training of paramedic students, medical students, pediatric and emergency medicine residents and EMTs.  Dr. Kumar is also a medical director of the Fire Police Academy at Nassau University Medical Center.

The Office of Minority Affairs has powers and duties as stated in the Nassau County Charter:
Assist the various officers of the county government in improving the delivery of quality of life services such as social services, mental health, health services, public works projects involving the minority community and public safety; provide access and opportunity for minority participation in county contract and procurement programs; produce and publish any research papers or studies on issues affecting the minority community; provide assistance in the implementation of Affirmative Action programs in county government employment, housing and the development of an annual Affirmative Action report required by the county for certain of its state and federal funding sources on employment opportunities for minorities in the work force and administer the county’s Affirmative Action program.
