PRESTIGIOUS APPOINTMENT IS TESTAMENT TO DR. SONG’S COMMITMENT TO WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE FOR THE UNINSURED AND UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES OF NASSAU COUNTY
East Meadow, NY…..In a letter dated October 13, 2008, and signed by Richard Fine, MD, Dean, Stony Brook School of Medicine, Joon Song, MD, PhD, an attending physician in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Nassau University Medical Center, received notification of his appointment as assistant professor in clinical obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive medicine at the School of Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), part of the NHCC safety-net health system, is a teaching institution, training hundreds of residents and medical students each year to obtain their clinical experience while serving diverse populations in a community hospital with a public mission. As an affiliate of the SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, many of NUMC’s faculty have academic appointments through the SUNY Stony Brook system. This is in recognition of scholarly and teaching efforts performed through the NHCC for Stony Brook students, NUMC’s residents, other trainees and the community at large.
In congratulating Dr. Song on his appointment, Steven Walerstein, MD, Senior VP for medical affairs and medical director for the NHCC said: “This recognition and honor reflect Dr. Song’s career-long commitment to women’s health. After having completed his residency at NUMC in OB/GYN, we are privileged to have Dr. Song as a leader specializing in women’s health and in elevating the quality of care for NHCC’s patients.”
Dr. Song completed his training in the field of OB/GYN at the Korean National Medical Center in Seoul, Korea and his reproductive endocrinology fellowship at the Korea University Hospital. He completed his doctoral degree in 1998 in the area of obstetrics and gynecology. While at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, Dr. Song completed a post doctoral fellowship in 2001 and served as a research scientist from 2001 until 2003, at which point he started a four year residency at NUMC, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, completing it in 2007. Dr. Song has been trained as an endoscopic surgeon in the area of gynecology, where certain conditions require surgical management due to disease in pelvic organs. Minimally invasive surgery has been developed for the goal of achieving more rapid treatment and better healing. Skilled in managing uterine and ovarian tumors, infertility and urinary incontinence, Dr. Song has significant experience obtained from performing over 1,000 cases of advanced surgery.
Dr. Song has been published in numerous prestigious journals publications, has extensively made presentations at academic meetings in his field and has received important prizes awarded by national and international research societies.
