IMPRESSIVE RECOGNITION FOR LEADER WITH VAST EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELDS OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS
CENTER PROVIDES LEGAL SERVICES FOR LOW-INCOME PERSONS IN NEW YORK STATE
East Meadow, NY……Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, congratulated Jack O’Connell, his special advisor, upon being elected as chair of the board of directors of the Empire Justice Center, a center that provides legal services for low-income persons throughout New York State. O’Connell will serve as chair during a one year term in 2010.

Empire Justice Center is a statewide, multi-issue, multi-strategy, public interest law firm focused on changing the ‘systems” within which poor and low-income families live. Empire Justice protects and strengthens the legal rights of people in New York state who are poor, disabled or disenfranchised through: systems change advocacy, training and support to other advocates and organizations, and high quality direct civil legal representation Empire Justice has a staff of 54 working out of four offices in Albany, Rochester, White Plains and on Long Island.
As the Special Advisor to Nassau Health Care Corporation’s President and CEO, Arthur Gianelli, O’Connell is responsible for general strategic advice, government relations and building outreach programs with the communities served by the Nassau University Medical Center, A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility and the various Community Health Centers.
Among the programs he has been responsible for the initiating at the Corporation are the development of the LI Federally Qualified Health Center, NuCare, The Chronic Illness Demonstration Project, The No Wrong Door Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Support Program, the Rotacare Project, and the Long Island Medical Foundation – the philanthropic arm of NHCC.
Prior to joining the staff at the Health Care Corporation Jack served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, the umbrella organization for all Long Island’s health and human service organizations. He joined the Council staff in 1976 and became the CEO in 1988.
In accepting the appointment as chair of the board of directors, O’Connell said: “I am honored to serve as chair of the board of directors of the Empire Justice Center, a statewide leading organization working to achieve social and economic justice for all persons in New York State.”
