INSTITUTE FOR HEALTHCARE DISPARITIES AT NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER PRESENTS SECOND ANNUAL NATIONAL BEST PRACTICES CONFERENCE ON APRIL 28, 2010 AT HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY

Working to lead health care equity dialogue in how environment impacts well recognized disparities in birth outcomes, adolescence, adulthood and old age in minority communities

East Meadow, NY……The Institute for Healthcare Disparities at the Nassau University Medical Center, in partnership with the Nassau County Department of Health Perinatal Services and the March of Dimes, is holding its Second Annual Best Practices Conferences “Bridging the Gap: Environment and Health through the Life Cycle” at Hofstra University, Hempstead, on April 28, 2010. The goal of the conference is to discuss the impact of environment on health throughout the life cycle.

“As the host of this national conference, the NuHealth System is pleased to be a key player, along with the Nassau County Department of Health Perinatal Services and the March of Dimes, in leading the health care equity dialogue,” Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System stated. “Significant evidence supports the conclusion that our individual well being, as well as the health of our communities, are impacted by the environment through all stages of the life cycle,” Gianelli added.

“Our conference will focus on the impact of the environment on health for the individual and for communities throughout the life cycle and how the environment impacts well recognized disparities in birth outcomes, adolescence, adulthood and old age in minority communities,” explained Aloysius B. Cuyjet, MD, MPH, FACC, FACP, senior vice president and chief health equity officer as well as chair of the Institute for Healthcare Disparities. “We hope our conference will influence physicians, community leaders and policy makers to make better decisions regarding healthcare to the underserved and to create or renew partnerships with peers in an effort to make a positive impact in our communities.”

The conference will feature national and local keynote speakers such as:

Marc S. Jacobson, MD, pediatric and adolescence medicine
Joel Forman, MD, assistant professor, Mt Sinai School of Medicine
Aloysius B. Cuyjet, MD, MPH, FACC, FACP, senior vice president and chief health equity officer
Maria Torroella Carney, MD, FACP, commissioner of health, Nassau County
Dennis P. Andrulis, PhD, MPH, director, center for health equality, Drexel University School of Public Health

“Since the inception of the Institute for Healthcare Disparities, we have worked to create partnerships with community and faith based organizations to deliver the message of healthy living, Conference outcomes will be used to guide the Institute’s work plan for 2010-2011” stated Carlos Alvarez, Executive Director for the Institute.
