MEDIA ADVISORY NUMC HUMAN INTEREST STORY
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patient, TURNED AWAY BY OTHER HOSPITALS, successfully delivers baby at 36 weeks at NUMC, receiving implantable defibrillator by NUMC multidisciplinary team, saving her life and that of her baby.
East meadow, NY…..Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, along with a Nassau University Medical Center multidisciplinary team of obstetricians, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, neonatologist, nurses and technicians will discuss, in the presence of patient Anne Marie Ballato and her newborn baby girl, Izabella, how her life and that of her baby were saved following delivery at 36 weeks, followed by implantation of a defibrillator a few days later. Patient had been turned away from other hospitals, once she was determined to be extremely high risk due to heart condition of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a hereditary disorder in which an abnormality of heart muscle cells leads to unregulated thickening and sometimes, obstruction to the outflow of blood into the circulation. There is a risk of sudden death related to rhythm disturbances. Some patients go on to having heart failure. The patient has several family members who died from this disorder. Through the NUMC team, the patient was afforded the expertise and professional collaboration needed to save her and her baby. PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES.
Leaders of the team will discuss the procedures:
Steven Walerstein, MD, FACP – Executive Vice-President for medical affairs
Chaur-Dong Hsu, MD, MPH, FACOG – Chair of OB/GYN
Sanjay Doddamani, MD, FACC, FASE – Chair of Cardiology
Patient- Anne Marie Ballato, along with baby Izabella, will thank the team for saving their lives.
