GREATER NYC AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE OFFICIALS TOUR NUMC’S BREAST CENTER
East Meadow, NY……Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure officials met at the Nassau University Medical Center’s breast center to tour the facility and to discuss the progress on their recently awarded $45,000 grant to help support the breast screening program at the National Mah Jongg League Foundation Breast Center at NUMC. The grant will assist in providing coverage of medical costs for medically underserved women ages 40-49 who have limited resources. The group discussed various accomplishments, progress toward objectives and any challenges that have been encountered.
Dana Richardson-Heron, CEO of Komen Greater NYC, indicated during the site visit: “At the Komen Greater New York City Affiliate, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered that women were still not accessing valuable early detection of breast cancer through mammography and follow up. We are confident that through the NuHealth System’s breast screening program underserved women in the community will have low-cost access to the care they need.”
Chris Mancuso, RN, director of the breast screening program at NUMC added: “We are grateful to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, for providing the NUMC breast center with a generous grant of $45,000, to help us better serve our uninsured and underinsured breast center patients and help to save lives through a breast cancer screening program. These funds will assist us in ensuring that all women continue to have access to quality breast services and care, regardless of their ability to pay. By beginning the breast screening program in the community, our aim is to recruit and enroll women right in their neighborhoods.”
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and the Greater New York City Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.
