GIANELLI INVITED TO PRESENT ON NUHEALTH’S HURRICANE SANDY EXPERIENCE, DURING EXECUTIVE BRIEFING OF THE AMERICAN HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL MEETING

East Meadow, NY….Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, has been invited to present as a guest speaker, during this year’s executive briefing at the annual meeting of the American Hospital Association (AHA). The executive briefing, focusing on the hospitals’ responses to super storm “Sandy’, is entitled “Surviving Sandy:  Hospitals Making the Best out of a Terrible Situation”.

Gianelli will discuss how the various components of the NuHealth System, the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC), the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility (AHP) and the five health centers located throughout Nassau County, mobilized prior to the onset of the hurricane, collaborated during the first week, as well as in the months that followed. NUMC’s team worked on the challenges of accepting 55 additional acute care patients, while AHP handled the transfer of 35 nursing home residents from Long Beach. At the Emergency Operations Center, the challenges of staffing, medications, food, facility support, gas, providing housing for displaced employees were met daily, and previously closed units were reopened as the census surged. Towards the end of the first week, the system received support from the federal Disaster Management Assistance Team, to work alongside NuHealth staff. During the presentation, Gianelli will also highlight the recognition by local, state and federal officials for the contributions and dedication by Nu Health’s employees as they dealt with the significant effects of the sudden increase in admissions and average daily census, demonstrating just how essential the NuHealth System is to the region’s well-being.

The briefing will include a moderator and two guest speakers:

1. Alan D. Aviles, President & CEO of New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation will be moderating the session and will be a speaker presenting the NYC Health and Hospitals experience.
2.  Arthur A. Gianelli, President and Chief Executive Officer of the NuHealth System in East Meadow, NY will present the Nassau University Medical Center “Sandy experience”.
3. John K. Lloyd, President, Meridian Health will speak about the experience of Meridian Health hospitals in New Jersey during and after Hurricane Sandy.

The AHA annual meeting will take place on April 29, 2013, from 10:45 am – 12:15 pm, in Washington D.C.
