Dear Employees:

We wish to extend our thoughts and prayers to all those, whose family members have perished or have not yet been accounted for, during the catastrophe that occurred in Haiti yesterday. A powerful earthquake hit Haiti, with many buildings collapsing and thousands feared dead, in an unprecedented disaster.

As a multi-cultural institution with a number of employees of Haitian descent, we, in the NuHealth System, want to rally and support them in a number of ways. To the extent that employees have relatives in Haiti and need emotional support or grief counseling, they can contact our chaplaincy program and we will be setting up an interfaith service through Sister Maureen Chase for early next week. We are also providing opportunities for any employee wishing to speak to our Human Resources department in order to take time off, especially for those looking to travel to Haiti in the coming weeks.

In addition, we are working with the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad (Association de Medecins Haitiens a l’Etranger a NY (www.amheny.org), along with Dr. Lambros Angus, NUMC’s trauma director and an AMHENY official, to coordinate relief efforts, in the form of canned goods, water and clothing at two drop off sites, one at NUMC (Carman Avenue entrance, storage closet right outside the auditorium) and within the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility.

Financial donations are direly needed and can be made through the www.amheny.org website or by sending a check to their post office box at PO Box 7055, Hicksville, NY 11801, attention disaster relief fund, or to the Red Cross (www.redcross.org), which is coordinating with AMHENY.

Haiti is a country in dire need of our assistance, a country without any infrastructure and your support would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your anticipated compassion.

Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO.
