Dr. Politi Welcomes 115 New Residents at NUMC
• Nassau University Medical Center has 115 new residents who have started July 1. They have already been at the hospital for a week of orientation, including training on advanced cardiac life support and our electronic medical record and computerized provider order entry systems.
• Our residency programs include Dental medicine and Oral Surgery, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Osteopathic Internship, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Radiology and Surgery. Fellowships include Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Oncology, Endocrinology, Child Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine. Training periods are from 1 year to 5 years. Some residents do both residency and fellowships with us, and stay 6 years or more.
• This is a very multi-cultural group, with residents originally from many countries-in addition to the USA, we have residents from countries including Venezuela, Russia, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Jordan.
• Medical schools as nearby as Stony brook, NYITCOM, and Mount Sinai are represented as well as far away schools such as Shanghai University in China, King Edward Medical College in India, and Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.
• Residents work in various settings-the in-patient units, in our ambulatory settings and family health centers, in the operating rooms. At first the new resident works mostly under direct supervision, but gradually advances to increased clinical responsibility under the leadership and training of more senior residents and attending physicians.
