CONGRESSWOMAN CAROLYN MCCARTHY TO PROVIDE $200,000 FEDERAL FUNDING FOR NUMC’S SEXUAL ASSAULT FORENSIC EXAMINER/SEXUAL ASSAULT RESPONSE TEAM

WHAT:  Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy will present $200,000 federal funding to NuHealth System officials for the Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner/Sexual Assault Response Team at the Nassau University Medical Center. NUMC has had a SAFE program since 2008, providing sexual assault victims compassionate and timely healthcare in a private setting, to reduce further trauma through the intervention of a highly trained interdisciplinary team. These vital federal funds will enhance training and provide the most advanced technology associated with DNA and other sexual assault forensic evidence collection and preservation, resulting in an increase in the successful prosecution of sex offenders and encouraging more survivors to report these crimes to law enforcement.

  NUMC’s Emergency Department Staff
  Various advocacy agencies

WHEN: Thursday October 21, 2010 at 1:30 P.M.

WHERE: Nassau University Medical Center
  First Floor Administration Board Room

WHY: Congresswoman McCarthy stated: “I was happy to help secure this funding; it is critically important and will provide training and the most advanced technology to recover and preserve evidence that will result in an increase and successful prosecution of sex offenders,” said Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy. “This funding will encourage more survivors to report these crimes to law enforcement. I thank all the groups involved in the collective effort to advance this issue and for helping law enforcement with the evidence they need to prosecute more sex offender cases.”
