ARTHUR A. GIANELLI, PRESIDENT/CEO OF THE NUHEALTH SYSTEM, IS A GUEST SPEAKER AT “PUBLIC HEALTH CHALLENGES AND ACHIEVEMENTS” CONFERENCE HOSTED BY HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY

East Meadow, NY… Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System was a presenter at Hofstra University’s “Public Health Challenges and Achievements 1935-2010,” celebrating the University’s 75th anniversary. The conference was held on Thursday November 4th, and Friday November 5th, 2010. Gianelli spoke on Thursday regarding the topic of, “Safety Net Medicine- Then and Now: Protecting the Public’s Health.”

 During his presentation, Gianelli focused on several elements dealing with the necessity for safety nets and implications under health reform for the safety net. “I am honored to have been selected to speak at the Hofstra University “Public Health Challenges and Achievements” conference, sharing my insights and knowledge regarding safety nets, resulting from my experience obtained during the last four years as the leader of a major multi-facility public safety net system in Nassau County and through my board membership in the National Association of Public Hospitals.”

The conference highlighted challenges and advances in public health over the past 75 years, from 1935-2010. Hofstra faculty, students and alumni, together with other leaders in the fields of public health policy, research, advocacy, education and practice, examined critical milestones of the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and today. Primary conference themes included: the changing face of morbidity, history and integration of physical activity and fitness reform, inequities in health care access and outcomes, advancements in women’s health and the challenges that remain, the public health response to environmental traumas. The conference included high profile keynote speakers, panel presentations with leading researchers, practitioners, officials and advocates, student poster presentations on conference themes and film viewing “Unnatural Causes” moderated by regional leader in health equity.

As President and Chief Executive Officer of the NuHealth System, Gianelli oversees a $545 million academic medical center, safety net provider, and integrated health delivery system consisting of the Nassau University Medical Center, the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility, four family health centers, and one school based clinic. He has held this position since June 1, 2006. Previously, Gianelli was appointed to the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the NuHealth System in March 8, 2006.

During his tenure, Mr. Gianelli shepherded the NuHealth System to profitability for the first time since its inception ten years ago. Since he began his tenure as Chief Executive Officer, the NuHealth System has been awarded nearly $80 million in funding from the State of New York for facility modernization, developing an electronic medical record, and debt relief. Mr. Gianelli has earned numerous professional, educational, and civic awards and serves as a board member for a number of not-for-profit, professional, and advocacy organizations. Mr. Gianelli has delivered numerous presentations around the country on panels hosted by the National Association of Public Hospitals, the New York State Health Foundation, and the Bond Buyer. He has served as a presenter at a Congressional briefing organized by the Partnership for Medicaid. For the prior ten years, he served in senior executive positions for two Long Island municipalities, as Deputy County Executive for Budget and Finance for Nassau County and as Director of Operations for the Town of North Hempstead.

Mr. Gianelli earned a Bachelors Degree in History from St. John’s University, a Master of Arts Degree in Political Science from Brown University, a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Dowling College, and a Masters Degree in Public Health from Columbia University.

Mr. Gianelli lives in New Hyde Park, New York with his wife, Nassau County District Court Judge Sharon Gianelli, and his two stepchildren, Cameron and Jessica.
