National reputation in the field of cardiovascular imaging

EAST MEADOW, NY….Arthur A. Gianelli, NuHealth’s President/CEO, announced the appointment of Amgad, N. Makaryus, MD, FACC, FASE, FSCCT, as chairman of the department of cardiology at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC).  In his new role as cardiology chairman, Dr. Makaryus will apply his skills for the oversight, guidance, and performance improvement support for all hospital wide cardiology programs and activities at NUMC.

“The recruitment of Dr. Makaryus, an outstanding clinician with a terrific track record of success in research, and many publications, fits very well within our health system and will take our hospital to the next level in advancing our mission of providing quality cardiology services to Nassau’s vulnerable populations,” said Gianelli.  “He brings a national reputation in cardiovascular imaging and the integration of cardiovascular imaging into the appropriate diagnosis and management of patients at risk for cardiovascular disease.”

Dr. Makaryus succeeds Dr. Sanjay Doddamani, who resigned recently, to accept an appointment at Geisinger Health System. “We are delighted to welcome a physician of Dr. Makaryus’ caliber to the NuHealth System,” said Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director for the NuHealth System.  “He brings a wealth of experience and his clinical and research expertise will be of tremendous benefit to the patients that we serve.”

Dr. Amgad N. Makaryus grew up in New York and completed medical school training at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in 2000.  He then went on to complete his Internal Medicine residency and cardiovascular fellowship at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY.  Further subspecialty training in cardiovascular imaging including echocardiography, cardiac CT, and cardiac MRI was undertaken by Dr. Makaryus from 2006-2007 at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York.  This subspecialty fellowship in cardiac imaging focused on training and research projects in the field of cardiovascular imaging. He returned to North Shore University Hospital in 2007 and served as director of cardiac CT and MRI (2008-2012) as well as director of the echocardiography laboratory (2009-2012). 

Dr. Makaryus is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology.  He has additionally received certification from the National Board of Echocardiography, Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology, Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and level II training in cardiac MRI.  He is a founding member of the Society of Cardiovascular CT, member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the American Society of Echocardiography, the North American Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Makaryus has authored over a hundred peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the field of cardiology and cardiovascular imaging.  His research interests include the ideal application and integration of cardiovascular imaging into the appropriate diagnosis and management of patients with and at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Makaryus, upon hearing of his appointment as chair of cardiology at NUMC, stated: “I am very happy and    excited to assume my new role as the chairman of cardiology at NUMC and look forward to working with an outstanding healthcare team to continue providing quality cardiac care to all our patients.”
