CUYJET, MD, MPH, APPOINTED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF HEALTH EQUITY OFFICER AT THE NASSAU HEALTH CARE CORPORATION, RESPONSIBLE FOR DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING NEW INITIATIVES AND PROGRAMS, THROUGH THE INSTITUTE FOR HEALTHCARE DISPARITIES, TO REDUCE RACIAL AND ETHNIC DISPARITIES IN MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY THAT IMPACT MANY OF NASSAU COUNTY RESIDENTS
East Meadow, NY….Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation (NHCC) announced the appointment of Aloysius B. Cuyjet, MD, MPH, former chair of the department of medicine and former vice president for clinical effectiveness and minority health at the NHCC, as NHCC’s senior vice president and chief health equity officer. In this position, Dr. Cuyjet will be responsible for development and implementing new initiatives and programs through the Institute for Healthcare Disparities to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in morbidity and mortality that impact many Nassau County residents.
“Dr. Cuyjet will serve as the face and voice of this company in the development of outreach, screening, training, education, and research programs designed to connect the minority population we serve to the care they need. This is truly the culmination of a lifetime of work in the trenches of the battle against inequities in health care delivery to – and outcomes for – members of minority communities,” said Mr. Gianelli.
Dr. Cuyjet received his B.A. from Brandeis University, his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine, and his M.P.H. from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Critical Care Medicine. Previously with the University of Medicine and Dentistry- New Jersey Medical School, where he was an Associate Professor of Medicine and Section Chief of Critical Care Medicine in the Divisions of Cardiovascular Diseases and Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine. In October 2005, Dr. Cuyjet joined NUMC as Vice President for Clinical Effectiveness and Minority Health Initiatives; in April 2006, he assumed the additional responsibilities as Chairman and Program Director of the Department of Medicine. As VP for Minority Health Initiatives, he has created the Institute for Healthcare Disparities at NUMC which launched in November 2007.
In addition to his prior academic appointments, he also holds an academic appointment as Clinical Professor of Medicine at SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine. He is a clinical trialist and lecturer and has authored book chapters, articles, and editorials. Recently, he completed a book chapter on minority participation in clinical trials. His clinical interests include hypertension, healthcare delivery in urban environments, and healthcare disparities.
He is active in many organizations including the Association of Black Cardiologists, the American College of Cardiology, 100 Black Men, and the American Heart Association. He was recently a board member of the Long Island Chapter of AHA and, in the past, has served on the boards of the National Boxing Safety Center, United Health Care System, the Association of Black Cardiologists and the New Jersey Blood Center. He also co-chairs the Nassau County Minority Health Task Force. He has received numerous awards and honors from various professional and community organizations.

The designation is a clear signal of NHCC’s commitment to achieve healthcare equity for all populations and to achieve the three goals of Triple Aim: improve population health, enhance the patient experience, and reduce per capita expenditures. My goal is to achieve those aims while garnering national recognition for NHCC and our Institute for Healthcare Disparities. To quote Alice Walker, ‘Always remember- the today you are building should be the tomorrow you want’,” added Dr. Cuyjet.
